CHAPTER 11

The noise in the Anaheim arena had reached deafening levels. Their fans screamed for Anaheim to end the battle that had raged on the ice for the past sixty minutes.

The Kingsnakes led 3—2 in the third period. With 32 seconds left on the clock, Anaheim forward Tyler Clark banged the puck past Kingsnakes goalie West Keller, tying the game and forcing overtime.

Now, with only 58 seconds left on the overtime clock, Anaheim was on the attack, and their fans demanded a victory.

Caleb Steele, Eli’s partner on defense, battled for the puck in the corner against John Black, a right winger for Anaheim.

Black dislodged the puck from beneath Steele’s skate and slid it to line mate David Morgan behind the Kingsnakes net.

Eli delivered a crushing body check against Morgan, shoving him hard into the glass.

“Steele, Go! Go!” Eli yelled.

Steele gained control of the puck and flipped it up ice to Fally, who skated up the left wing boards.

Ryder rushed up the ice on the right, careful to stay a step behind Fally so the play wasn’t called offside. Once Fally crossed the blue line and entered the offensive zone, Ryder smacked his blade on the ice. “Fally!”

Fally dodged an Anaheim defenseman and passed the puck to Ryder, who sent it back to center Shaw Castle. Shaw buzzed around the blocker side of the Anaheim goaltender before moving behind the net and scanning the ice for his next move.

“Heads up!” Fally yelled.

An Anaheim defenseman careened around the net, heading straight for Shaw.

Ryder banged his stick on the ice. “Shawsy!”

Shaw flew to the right corner and snapped off a pass to Ryder as the Anaheim player shoved him face first into the boards.

“Now, Irish!” Fally yelled.

Ryder charged into the slot, blistering a wrist shot at Anaheim’s goaltender. Fally headed for the left side, anticipating a rebound. The puck grazed the top of the goaltender’s glove and sailed into the back of the net. With two seconds left on the clock, the Kingsnakes had scored and won the game.

Ryder threw his hands in the air as his teammates tackled him.

“That’s the way, boys!” Shaw yelled. Goalie West Keller came flying up the ice and joined the huddle as they all head-bumped his mask.

“Way to go, Irish. You’re a fucking beauty.” Fally clapped him on the back as they headed for the tunnel. “We needed that win.”

The game had mimicked playoff-level intensity with the fast pace and continuous back and forth scoring. It felt good to walk away with a win on the road after two back-to-back losses in the past week.

Ryder let out a sigh of relief. He hadn’t scored in five games, and he didn’t want it to stretch into a six game slump.

He could finally relax and take a breath.

Later, on the team bus, Fally glanced over at Ryder, who sat next to him. “You want to go grab some food at that steakhouse we like?”

Ryder shook his head. They had tomorrow off in the city for some team activities. Coach was on one of his kicks where he wanted them all to bond.
