Chapter Fifteen
They reached the end of the embankment at Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge and the great golden domes of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior gleamed a short distance ahead. She paused at the corner, and Misha wondered if she was thinking the same thing he was. This was a place to part; he could head back to his apartment north of the river, while she crossed south and returned to hers. But he didn’t want that. He decided to try and stretch this glorious day a bit longer. “Now that I’ve shown you my favorite tower, do you want to see one of the best views of the city?”
“Better than the one from Ekaterina’s building?”
“Much,” he said, thinking that his newest favorite view was the one right beside him.
She glanced over her shoulder, looking south, as though she were thinking it over. “Is it far?”
“No, not at all. Quite close, really. And on your way back to Zamoskvorechie.”
The small smile on her pink lips showed he’d put her at ease by respecting the boundaries she’d set for their relationship, and not trying to lure her to some far-flung destination...or back to his apartment. “Sure, why not? Show me.”
He expected that Amy, being somewhat religious, would appreciate Christ the Savior Cathedral. Though it was new, the impressive Byzantine-style church was a replica of the historic church that stood on this spot until Stalin blew it up. “Some people complained it cost too much money to rebuild, but it is a beautiful building,” he said.
“If they hadn’t destroyed the first one, they wouldn’t have had to build a new one,” Amy said, framing a shot with her phone. She pointed up to the observation deck on the cathedral’s large center dome. “Is that where we’re going to see your favorite view?”
“Not there. This way.”
In front of the Cathedral was an ornate metal footbridge that arched gracefully over the Moscow River. He took her hand and led her about halfway across, then stopped at the bridge’s highest point and turned east. From this vantage point above the middle of the river, a panorama spread out before them. To the left was the cathedral, the Kremlin and its towers. On the right were the refurbished industrial buildings that lined the bank of Bolotny Island.
“Here?” she asked, surprised. “I thought you were going to take me someplace up high.”
“You don’t always have to look down from above to find the beauty. I would rather be in the midst and experience it with every sense, not just sight.”
The voices of others on the bridge and the constant hum of city traffic surrounded them. There was the moist, vaguely fishy smell of the river...and the light spicy scent of Amy’s hair, as the breeze lifted a few loose strands. Misha stood behind her, conscious of the warmth of her body, and placed his hands on either side of her, gripping the metal rail. It was all he could to keep from wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close and telling her everything that was in his heart.
