By this time Gerald and Uncle Gregor had finished their round of the hirsel (it had taken the whole morning) so they went in and sat down to a midday meal of mince collops and a steam pudding. Matt had spent the morning in bed and came down looking tousled and sleepy; he complained of a headache.

‘You should have been out with us,’ his father told him. ‘We’ve had a good walk over the hills. Gerald likes Cannochbrae, don’t you, Gerald?’

‘The place is going to pot,’ said Matt crossly.

‘It needs a bit done to it,’ admitted Uncle Gregor. ‘Maybe I’ll get an extra man in the spring.’

‘But you’re not ashamed to beg,’ interrupted Uncle Gregor.

It was obvious that Cousin Matt didn’t understand the scriptural allusion. Gerald did – and hid a smile.

‘I don’t know what you mean,’ mumbled Matt. ‘I want a loan, that’s all. I’d pay back, of course.’

‘M’h’m,’ said Uncle Gregor incredulously.
