Chapter 36

Extraction

Jackie released the magazine from the AR-15 and inspected the round count as he waited for the elevator doors to open.

Charlie slammed his fist against the door. “Damn it! Come on!”

As the elevator approached the floor, Charlie pointed his weapon at the center of the door in anticipation of its arrival. He screamed down the hallway at the onlookers, “Get in your rooms and lock the doors!”

Suddenly, the center of the doors split open to reveal the two female students huddled in the corner, like frightened animals.

“What happened? Where’s Billy?” Jackie asked.

He yelled down the hallway for Debbie as Charlie questioned them. The two girls were so distraught they could barely form their words. As Jackie asked Debbie to take the girls, he heard the words that made his heart drop. They took him.

Instinctively, he and Charlie jumped into the elevator, headed for the lobby. The expression on Debbie’s face as the elevator door closed jolted him. It was one of dread. Suddenly, he was thrust back to that bloody day in the parking lot when he’d nearly died. The long ride to the lobby was taking him back to that same spot. Charlie, Billy, and he had all spilt blood there, and now it was like round two. All back in the same place, under the same circumstances.

He shouldered the rifle and pointed it to the doors that would soon be opening. He could feel his palms sweating as he adjusted his grip on the weapon. As he glanced over the buttstock at Charlie, he saw an expression of worry he was sure mirrored his own. Charlie had come close to losing his son a handful of times since departing Georgia, and now Billy was all by himself with those killers. Just before the doors opened to the ground floor, Jackie realized he was barefooted. He’d been resting in bed when the screams from the hallway hit his ears. When he learned that two students had left and Billy had chased after them, his only thought was to grab a rifle and go.

“Don’t get sucked into the middle of the lobby without clearing the area to your left,” Charlie ordered. “Cut the pie and clear the corners.”

“Copy that.”

All the jargon and tactical-speak were like a second language now for Jackie. Cutting the pie was just another way of saying to gradually split the angles with your weapon until you could clear an area on the other side of a wall, so as not to fully expose yourself to a threat on the other side.

“Remember, fire center mass. There should be at least three of them,” Charlie said.

Jackie silently repeated the commands in his head along with what they meant. Fire center mass. Aim for the chest. Jackie could feel his throat tighten as he tried to swallow before the doors opened.

“Here we go, Jackie. Stand by.”

With the lobby visible, Charlie leaned out, cutting the pie to his right, then quickly recentering his weapon’s barrel toward the front entrance. Jackie mimicked the movement, but on the left side.
