Chapter six

I get back to the bed-and-breakfast, and even though I should be tired, I can’t seem to get my mind off that house and the people who once lived in it. I pull my laptop out of its case and set it on the small desk beside the bed, booting it up while my knee bounces with anxiety. Something got into my car, and it waited for me, making sure I saw what it had before disappearing into the house. What she had. I know it was a woman just by the figure alone, and even from across the street on Lynn’s porch, I could feel the sinister energy.

That is my family’s home. There is no denying it, but what resides in there now? Could that be Taya? Is her ghost left inside those walls to relive the horrors her father inflicted upon her? Is that why she can’t leave? What about the habit? I know that wasn’t hers. At least I don’t think so. Taylee was the only one on record to have been a part of the church.

Once the laptop is running, I bring up a search engine and type in Taya Greene, Sandpoint. Old newspaper articles pop up, pages having been scanned into the archives, about the Greene family and their contributions to the town. But there’s nothing about Taya. A part of me is relieved because maybe this is proof that Lynn’s mind is so far gone, and I’m being told a woman’s wild imagination as facts. I came here to research and find my family, and that’s what I have to do.

I close the laptop and set my alarm for early the next morning. I know the local library will have archives of newspapers and that’s where I’ll start, where I should’ve started from the very beginning. I stifle a yawn and begin to undress for bed, cursing myself for falling into a trap. Lynn is not in her right mind, and while I’m out tomorrow, I will see if I can find a next of kin for her. It’ll be hard since I didn’t get a last name, but surely the town’s people will know who I’m talking about. She seems to be the only one left living on that street.

As soon as my head hits the pillow, relief washes over me. I let myself get too carried away and forgot my true reason for being here. I want to learn about where I came from, what my blood means, and who, if anyone, is left that I can form a bond with. I’m missing that in my current family, and I guess I want the best of both worlds. Wealth and power, love and acceptance.
