Chapter Twenty-one

Jocelyn held the wicker basket on her lap as she sat sideways across Rayne’s thighs on his big black stallion.

“It isn’t far, but the trail’s pretty steep.” His arm tightened protectively around her. “I promise the trip will be worth it.”

In most ways, it already was. She was here with Rayne, the breeze kept the heat of the sun at bay, and the sky formed a crystal-blue dome above their heads. Jocelyn peered over Rayne’s shoulder to watch the valley fall away below them, the fields forming quilted patterns, the blue-green ocean tinting the horizon.

Only thoughts of the future clouded the brightness of the day.

“There’s a pool up ahead. We’ll luncheon there.” Rayne turned the horse toward an overgrown gully lined with dense green foliage, and the sound of tumbling water filled the air.

Jocelyn shifted against him, trying to ignore the feel of his work-hardened thighs beneath her own long legs, the solid wall of muscle that was Rayne’s chest. She blushed at the thick ridge of desire that had risen against her bottom, the husky tone that roughened the last words he had said.

In minutes he had reined up in front of a high cascading waterfall, the air around it glistening with misty rainbows.

“Oh, Rayne, it’s beautiful.”

“Paulo told me about it sometime back. I thought you might like it.”

“I love it.”

He dismounted and helped her down, then turned his attention to the horse. “I won’t be long.”

Jocelyn busied herself spreading out the patchwork quilt Rayne had brought, and was smoothing out the folds when she stepped backward, stumbling over something she mistook for an odd-shaped log. At a second quick glance, her eyes flew wide and her loud scream rent the hillside.

“What is it?” Rayne came on the run, dragging her into his arms and searching for possible danger.

“O-Over there! It’s—It’s some kind of monster!”

Rayne stepped away from her and into the thick green foliage.

“Be careful,” she warned.

To her relief, he didn’t stay long. Picking his way back through the lush growth of palm fronds and ferns, he walked toward her, chuckling.

“Come on. We won’t go too near, just close enough for you to have a look.” He took her hand and tugged her back through the foliage, Jocelyn peeking around his shoulder.

“W-What is it?”

He was laughing again, and this time she knew why. When she stared into the grass, she saw the biggest green lizard she had ever seen.

“I don’t believe it.”

“I told you you wouldn’t.”

“ ‘You won’t believe the size of the lizards,’ ” they both said in unison. Rayne’s thick chest rumbled with mirth, and Jocelyn started laughing, too.

The lizard must have heard them, for he opened his mouth, bunching thick folds of ugly green skin beneath his jaw, and made a sort of hissing sound in his throat. Then he was scurrying away on his bent stubby legs, dragging his long pointed tail. He dove for cover and disappeared into the foliage—all six feet of him.

“You weren’t kidding,” Jo said, wiping away tears of laughter as Rayne led her back to the blanket.
