“Hello,” I said warmly.

“Where are you?” asked Diego.

“I’m with Levi,” I replied.

“My Uncle Levi?” asked Diego excitedly. “Can I talk to him?”

“Sure,” I replied. “Levi, Diego wants to speak to you.” I held the phone out and he took it from me.

“Nephew,” said Levi. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” Diego replied. “When are you coming to get me? I want to go hang out with Joe at the carwash.” Levi laughed.

“Let me talk to Caroline first then we will discuss me coming to get you, alright?” asked Levi.

“Okay,” Diego replied. “Can I speak back to Caroline please?”

“Sure thing,” Levi replied. “But I will be coming to get you later to take you shopping.”

“Sweet,” Diego replied. Levi handed me back the phone.

“Hello.”

“Can you pick up some cereal and milk?” asked Diego. “I ate the last of the Fruity Pebbles last night.” I smiled.

“I guess. You were so high last night I thought you were going to eat everything,” I said looking over at Levi. He opened the front door like he wasn’t paying attention to our conversation. And I tried not to say it too loud because Juan Carlos might kill me. I didn’t smoke the blunt with him, but I gave it to him. He smokes all of the time at home, but he hides when he does it. Juan Carlos knows that he smokes weed occasionally. He often jokes that Sophia ‘the weed head’ is the one who has his son indulging in the culture. I figured the poor kid needed something to ease his mind after the past few weeks he’s had. It’s amazing that he hasn’t flipped out. I just want to talk to my husband, and I’ll feel much better about everything.
