Chapter 17

Nate and I kissed on my couch for a while, making out like high school students. I liked kissing him because he did everything just right: he went slow, taking his time with me and not rushing; he didn’t shove his tongue down my throat; and he used just the right amount of pressure. He had one arm around the back of the couch, not touching me, and his other hand was gently placed at my hip—and it didn’t move. His face was a little scruffy, even though the blond facial hair was barely visible because it was so light, but I didn’t mind it. If anything, I liked it. Nate proved to be a very good kisser.

Either time flew by or we only locked lips for seconds. I pulled away for a breath, and he leaned back a little to give us some room. Even with the space between us, I could barely fill my lungs. He brushed the pad of his thumb against my cheekbone in a sweet gesture. “It’s getting late, and there’s a game tomorrow.” Nate smiled at me. “I’d better go.”

I was caught off guard. “Oh, okay,” I said, trying to recover from my disappointment without letting him see how I really felt.

“I’ll see you tomorrow morning, though, right? At the morning skate?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” When I nodded for good measure, he stood, so I did too. I wasn’t sure what I had expected to happen, but this sure wasn’t it. As much as I might have hoped for it, I didn’t think we’d actually kiss; and then when we did kiss, it was good but over way too soon. We walked to the door, and I escorted him out to the hallway. I hesitated in the threshold, wondering what I was supposed to do next.

Luckily, Nate spoke up so I didn’t feel as awkward. “Thanks again for the pizza, Audrey. This was fun.” He leaned in and wrapped his arms around me, kissed my cheek and then my lips. His mouth lingered over mine, and I could feel his breath brush my face when he said, “This was a lot of fun. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Good night, Nate.” I let go of him and watched him as he headed for the stairwell. His jeans were filled out nicely—a perk of being a hockey player.

Once he was gone, I leaned against the door and let out a deep sigh through my big smile. It seemed to me like, as soon as I had finally admitted to myself that I liked him, we were hooking up. That wasn’t the usual luck I had when it came to guys. Either I was getting unwanted attention from jerks or creeps, or I tried to initiate something with a guy who was too shy or scared to make a move. So this was a new experience for me: seemingly mutual attraction with a kind, decent man.

Except this kind, decent man was the captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and I was a reporter for the Ohio Sports Network, solely dedicated to covering the team.
