THE driver saluted beside the open tonneau door. G-8 cracked a slight smile as he answered and stepped into the car. The door slammed. There had been no hesitancy on the part of the driver in recognizing him. G-8 felt better. As the car rolled out of the airdrome and gathered speed toward Freiburg, G-8 ran over what he had learned about Kapitan Schlosser. He had assumed from the general appearance of the fellow during their short association that he was the gruff, snooty, Prussian type of offizier. On the contrary, he was apparently more of a jovial type. So that would be it. On entering the car, G-8 had smiled only slightly in answering the driver’s salute. That seemed to have gotten by. He had not even given orders as to their destination. The driver hadn’t asked. G-8 wasn’t volunteering any information that wasn’t required. The town of Freiburg as they swung down the main street was filled with offiziers and men. Hundreds of them. There seemed to be a significant tenseness in them as the car swung to a stop before the largest building. It was as though someone had said, “In that car comes the Special Messenger with orders for our movements. Where do we go now?” G-8 felt the prickle of a thousand and more staring eyes upon him. Not one of his movements was missed. The driver leaped from his seat and stood at attention with the tonneau door open. G-8 stepped from the car and strode up the steps without an instant’s hesitation. A single pause as though any of this was new to him and he was lost. A guard at the door of the building presented arms and partly barred G-8’s entrance. G-8 saluted and took another step as though he was used to walking into the place without being stopped, except for the slight formality of salute. “You may announce Kapitan Schlosser to his Excellenz,” he said. “Jawohl!” That worked. The guard wheeled and strode inside the main door.

G-8 followed close behind. Not once did the guard turn and glance back. He paused at the third door on the right down the main corridor of the building and knocked. A booming voice said: “Kommen!” The guard opened the door, stepped inside for an instant. There were voices. Then the guard stepped out again and stood at one side to let G-8 pass. G-8 was inside. The door closed behind him. Instantly he was at his utmost calm. General von Kuhl, gray-haired, and mustached — the latter waxed at the ends in an upward thrust — gave him a nod. Heels clicked. G-8 snapped his salute. “Ach, Kapitan Schlosser! You bring the most important papers. Give them to me at once. The time I believe is nearly here.” G-8 flipped the papers from his pocket and handed the sealed envelope to the general. A tense minute or two passed. The Yank watched every expression, every movement of the facial muscles of the general.
