When Chris’s mother announced in August that she would be staying at his grandmother’s home in Grand Rapids over the upcoming weekend to help organize her attic, his stomach twisted. Now was the chance, and he had to take it. He waved goodbye to her as she drove away Friday evening, and the minute her car was gone, he threw up from nerves. He swallowed his overwhelming fear and drove to Heron View with enough food for himself, a small cooler of fish for Sybil, maps, and the garden hose in tow, praying that everything would turn out fine. When he arrived, he parked by a water pump located by the janitor’s shed. He hooked up the hose and turned the knob. Water slowly filled the back of the pickup and he sprinted to the ride. He unlocked the rear door, ran up the stairs, and went over to the edge of the tank.

“Sybil? Can you hear me? It’s time to go. Trust me, everything will be fine!” he called out. The water was still, very unlike her. She was usually restless when he came to feed her, splashing and flooding water everywhere. He leaned forward and looked down, trying to see what was keeping her. He just wanted to get the journey over with and go back to being like everyone else, tired of keeping this locked up inside him. “I never wanted this, you know. I never liked you,” he called out, finally admitting it aloud.

Chris felt the hot flash of pain in his forehead, and his ears rang. “Neither did I!” Sybil screeched. Her hands lunged up to the surface and grabbed his ankles. He fell in headfirst, sinking into the depths. He felt around for something to grab onto. Bubbles and dark shadows clouded his vision, and his head roared with a blinding ache. Panic filled his body, wondering what was going on. Before he could think to scream, everything went black.

The water of the tank turned red. Sybil feasted on Chris’s remains, filled with triumph and pride at her ability to fool not only one but two humans.

She would have never made it as a lone wolf, an outcast from the colony in the dark, rancid lake. She had to think of a plan for survival, a way for things to work out in her favor with little effort. Growing up, she had heard stories about human men who fell for females of her kind, and her idea grew from there. There were so many roles to choose from, a singing siren or a mysterious water maiden. She chose the unconventional role of a martyr, filled with scars, sympathy, and wisdom, complete with a thrilling, but false, backstory. Her reward would be easy prey.

She knew Chris had a family; he mentioned his pathetic mother and dead father to her in the past. Someone would come along to find him. All she had to do was sit and wait for the chance to strike again. More food would come along; no more surviving on scraps.
