Chapter Fifteen

Alvin

Early the following morning, we’d been moved to a suite thanks to help from Kozmo’s best friend Julissa. They extended the reservation to Friday, giving us an extra couple of days to relax and avoid paparazzi. They also had groceries delivered through a service for us so we wouldn’t have to leave to get anything. I was exhausted, but it hadn’t been 24 hours yet. Alani refused to let me go to sleep because she was worried about what might happen due to the concussion. We stayed up, talking through the late hours.

After a few days past, she relaxed. Most of the lightheadedness and dizziness had subsided, so she wasn’t as overprotective of me as she had been the first night.

“Hey. How you feeling?” She tapped my shoulder when I started to doze off on the documentary we had been watching.

“I have a slight ringing in my ears and a bit of a headache, but I’m alright.”

“Al, we should get you back to the hospital. Where are your brothers now?”

“AJ is probably at practice.”

“I’m going to shoot him.”

“That’s exactly what he said. Parker and Julian went back to Houston of course, but before they left they told me if I got killed, Gran would haunt them for not stopping me from doing something stupid. AJ protested bringing me here in the first place, then called the two of them, who proceeded to yell at me. They threatened to tie me to my bed, amongst other things. All this was in high-pitched yells. Done to the person with a migraine the size of this damn state.”

“You should’ve stayed at the hospital, Al. How’d you convince AJ to bring you?”

“Said I’d drive myself if he didn’t, plus I have some leverage on him.”

She gave me a look.

“That’s between brothers, can’t share that one, but listen … the doctors told me I needed to stay awake, drink plenty of fluids, and rest. You’ve been making sure I’ve been doing just that. Even kept me up for a whole day. I wanted to make sure you were okay and it turned out that you were the one doing all the checking.”

“I won’t be okay if you die, dumbass.”

Her anger seemed to be subsiding and I felt bad for worrying her, but I truly couldn’t take my mind off. We’d been talking about Mel and how all of that went to shit. It wasn’t something I wanted to discuss because she wasn’t important at all, but it was necessary for us to be able to move forward. When I told her Kaymee was ready to knock her ass out, that made the entire conversation a little more bearable. Eventually I got her to shift to her fellowship and how it went. That covered two days of babble and honestly, it reminded me of the times we spent in my dorm or her apartment just shooting the shit. I made a promise to myself to go get checked out in a few days when we left here.
