“All right then, Clan Lord,” she said, leaning back and smirking. “You’ve proven that you aren’t as dumb as you look. Make your offer. I’ll decide what’s to become of you afterward.”

He stood upright, shoulders squared, chest puffed out, doing his best to appear commanding despite his unfamiliar surroundings. The words he practiced came after the barest hesitation, but never did his eyes leave the Spear Maiden’s. “As you know, these are dire times. A great evil has taken hold of our world and the dead walk openly between clanholds. I’m new to my title of Clan Lord, yet even I know that the draugr threaten us all. Unless certain measures are taken, I fear none of us will survive the coming Freeze.”

Ingrid made a motion, indicating he should get on with whatever he was about to say.

Jarl took a deep breath. “I propose an alliance between our two clanholds. United, we’ll stand a better chance against the draugr. And perhaps we can be an example for the other clanholds to follow.”

Ingrid considered him for several moments, her expression revealing nothing. Her hand drifted up to fidget with her braid as she continued to stare all of them down. When she did speak, it was like she was musing to herself. “All this talk of unity lately... it’s bound to make the Aesir furious. But of course, when did the battleborn consider the feelings of a bunch of old sorcerers?”

Jarl glanced back at Runa. She was looking at her feet, but her face betrayed just how uncomfortable she felt. His honor guards, on the other hand, were as stony-faced as statues.

Finally, the Spear Maiden addressed him. “The timing of your offer is... curious to me, Jarl Beckström. It wasn’t that long ago that Norvaask was marching to lay siege to our clanhold. If it wasn’t for the draugr, you would have decimated both of our armies, not just your own.”

“That was the decision of Ivar Haig,” he said. “Because of me and my battleborn, his line has ended. They will trouble you no more.”

“And yet our people have killed each other for generations—perhaps more than any other clanhold. I’m sure there are those who disagreed with you coming here in the first place. Do you think that such an alliance would even be possible?”

“I do,” Jarl answered honestly.

“And what makes you so sure?”

Jarl considered this for a moment before responding. “Our people are stubborn, yes, but they aren’t fools. When they see the extent of the threat we’re facing, they’ll band together and fight a common enemy. As leaders, we’ll just need to guide them there. That’s my hope, anyway.”

She chewed on his response like a piece of undercooked meat. Her eyes drifted to the scar-faced man, Sven, who merely shrugged. Eventually she sighed, appearing unconvinced. “I’ll admit, your offer is interesting to me, but I regret that I cannot accept. Not yet, at least.”

Jarl gave her a questioning look. “Why not?”

“You may be the new Clan Lord of Norvaask,” she replied, “but I don’t know you.
