CHAPTER SEVEN

“YOU’RE MARRIED? CONGRATULATIONS.” The hospital administrator barely looked up from his papers.

Okay, so this wasn’t the reception he’d expected. No conflict of interest speeches or comments about there needing to be oversights.

Maybe finding out that Sara was pregnant wouldn’t have been such a big deal either. Although the administrator had been known to come down on anyone who might give the gossip columns something to chew on. Some of their more conservative sponsors were pretty strict about the hospital’s reputation. That included its staff.

Paulo was all about keeping things running as smoothly as possible and making sure the income and expenses were lined up in neat little rows. Sponsors and benefactors had to be kept happy.

“As of two days ago, yes.” He didn’t even want to think about what they’d done on their honeymoon night. In fact, that was why he was here alone, instead of presenting that united front they’d talked about. He hadn’t been able to face her at the apartment. Not yet.

He’d been pretty careful to come home when Sara was already in bed and leave before she got up in the morning. That had meant taking naps in his office during the day, but it was the only way he could function.

“Good, good. Make sure the nurses’ housing department knows that there’s an empty apartment available. And make sure Human Resources knows about her name change for tax purposes.”

Name change. He’d forgotten about that. Damn.

“Right, I will.” The sooner he got out of this office the better. He was going to have to tell Sara that it went well, but maybe he wouldn’t let on just how well it had gone. “Thank you.”

The man waved him away, before looking up suddenly.

Sebastian tensed, waiting for the ax to finally fall.

“If you could write me up a statement on how things are going with the mobile clinic, I would like to use it for publicity. Maybe along with a congratulations announcement and a picture of the happy couple. We’ve had a couple of weddings over the last year or so. It might make for some good visibility for the hospital.”

What the hell? Oh, Sara would just love that. And the man would probably get a big kick out of knowing they hadn’t really spoken much over the last couple of days. Just some business stuff. But that would change tomorrow when they had to meet to do their rounds in the favela. There was no way to maintain silence when you were trapped together in a vehicle for an entire day.

“I’ll check with her and see what she thinks.”

The man’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I would think that as a new hospital employee, she would be glad to help in any way she could.”

A veiled threat? Not happening. And Sebastian wasn’t about to let it slide by unnoticed.

“Would you care to rephrase that, sir?” The hospital might think it could do without Sara, but could it do without both of them? There were only a handful of oncologists that could do what he did in the field of osteosarcoma.
