Chapter 50 – Over the Trailer
The first thing to come back was taste. Both Chett and Harry had the taste of copper or pennies in their mouths. Most everything came back quickly afterward except for sight. Their retinas were still seared from earlier.
Both of them were lying on their backs, strapped at every juncture to tables. Neither knew how close or how far they were from the other.
Chett turned his head to the left. He was the first to speak. “Harry? You here?”From somewhere to his right, Harry answered. “Where the hell are we?”
Chett turned his head in the direction of Harry’s voice. “Are we dead?”
“Don’t think so.” Harry grunted. “But we are held pretty tight.” He struggled against the restraints.
Someone or something in the room made funny noises. Neither Chett nor Harry could tell if the noises were animal or human, but the more Harry thought about it, he had heard something similar before. Star Trek? Maybe. No, that’s not it. But he was headed in the right direction. It had been on TV. Where on TV had he heard those sounds? That’s it! National Geographic. It had been a few years, but he remembered seeing part of a special on the Bushmen of Africa on the staticy public broadcasting channel he got when his coat hanger antenna was pointed just right.
So they were trapped by … Africans? Must be. Why not? All bets were off. Harry’s mind raced back over the litany of recent improbable and insane events. Being knocked out and bound by Africans. It fit if for no other reason that it doesn’t make a lick of sense.
As Harry was deep in thought, Chett was already talking. “Hello? Who’s there?”
More clicking, screeching and muttering.
Chett waited for something intelligible. After a few moments, he spoke again into the relative darkness. “What do you want with us? Hello? Who are you?”
Still more clicking, screeching and muttering.
Chett’s inquisitions continued unfruitfully for a few minutes.

Roscoe looked from the two captives to Earl. “What the hell are they doing?”
The captive on the left was making funny sounds.
Earl stroked his goatee. “I think they’re trying to talk.”
“Why’d you go and save ‘em?” Roscoe asked, looking back to the captives.
“You mean it wasn’t you?”
“Nope. Thought it was you.”
They both looked at each other with sudden insight. Earl was the first to voice it. “The ship. That bitch.”
“Why’d she go and do that?”
“Don’t know. But they do look a little more like us than those things we saw earlier.”
“Where?” Roscoe asked.
“When we landed the first time. On the ice island.”
“Oh.” Roscoe paused. “You don’t reckon that these are the intelligent life on this little planet?”
“Why not? We’re intelligent, aren’t we? And they look a little like us, don’t they? I mean, sure, they’re all weird and gross looking, but they could be. Seems they’re trying to talk to us, don’t it?”
“Well, what do you think they’re trying to say?”
“Beats me,” Earl replied. “But you had to go and basically destroy the ship’s communication center, so she can’t really translate for us, can she?”
“Well, it’s probably not important anyway.
