Chapter 18

Brotherhood of the Necromancer

Tasaria looked frantically about the room but failed to locate the presence she expected to be there. How could she be there? Still the memory was fresh. Her nerves still tingled with the sensation left where the spectral hand had pressed against her chest, and the words echoed in her mind. It would be impossible for her to go back to sleep now. She rose and gathered her garments about her, illuminating candles to dispel the darkness as she moved. The room was frigid. Hopefully the water in the basin wasn’t frozen completely.

It nearly was. She chipped at it, shook it until something useful spilled into her mug, which she took with her back to the bed. At least the residual heat from it was better than nothing. She huddled under the blankets.

As she loudly crunched the ice, the rough edges of which bit into her cheeks and tongue, Tasaria’s thoughts turned to her husband and home. What was happening there? Was he safe? When she meditated on him, the energies of the unseen world revealed nothing to her. More than anything right now, she wished he was here for her to talk to. Perhaps he’d already fulfilled the Master’s mission with regards to the infant and was spiriting her here this very minute. The thought of seeing his face again momentarily cheered her, then she remembered the spy who had escaped with Espen and her thoughts again darkened. She hated this place. Tasaria tried to banish the thought from her mind, but it was insidious. Was this thought her own or her mother's? She rose to get more ice and momentarily caught a glimpse of her reflection in the nearby mirror. Her eyes fixated on the image suspended before her: the ever increasing wrinkles in the face, the silver highlights streaking through the once coal-black hair, the world-weary look in the eyes. She had always resembled her mother, but as she aged, the similarities became more striking. She need fear no phantom for her mother already stood before her in earthly form. Tasaria completed her task then returned once more to the security of the bed.

Perhaps it was the troubling nature of this place that relentlessly worked on her imagination—the isolation, the unexplained noises she sometimes heard. Or maybe it was the fact she was compelled to work with the man who was directly responsible for Nasi’s death. Hadn’t Pias already betrayed them all by killing her? She crunched down on the ice so hard, she felt certain she’d chipped a tooth.

But despite this, he was still here. Nicabar tolerated him, and though it was obvious that he didn’t trust him either. The Master and Pias spent hours together now talking in private and touring the fortress. Why did they keep her
