Chapter 12

Don

Clio, Michigan

March 20

Don’s legs ached, but other than that, he was feeling good. The gear he’d borrowed from his dad had kept him nice and toasty, with the only exception being his nose. He’d usually take a face mask whenever he went outside—the kind that went above your nose and wrapped around your neck—but it wasn’t in his coat pocket like it usually was. Either he’d forgotten it, or it had fallen out during their trek through the woods.

After their brief encounter with the dogs, they were hot on the trail again, countless paw prints leading the way. Like before, they came across several forks in the path, but they stuck to the main one—the one where the majority of the prints led. It had felt like hours, and the landscape looked mostly the same, but only another hour had passed.

They had remained nearly silent while they followed the trail, but a conversation was struck up when they came to a clearing with a few houses nearby. There were only three to four houses, but all of them were large. They had kept the road to the west, and Don knew exactly where they were. They were past Bronner’s now, to the right, and were approaching the Cass River.

“You thinking this is it?” Doug asked in a whisper while looking through his scope. He had it aimed toward a gray house directly ahead of them. “Past these fields is the river, and then the inner parts of Frankenmuth.”

“The river’s where their food source is, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re living alongside it,” Don said. “The tracks keep going dead ahead toward that gray house you’re looking at, and I’m betting they’ve stuck to the south side of the river.”

Noah raised his eyebrows. “What makes you think that? There’s plenty of ways over and around the river.”

“It’s a good natural landmark, and coyotes are territorial,” Don said, shrugging. “There’s more than one pack out here, so it’s just a guess.”

“It’s a good guess. I wouldn’t be all that surprised,” Doug said. He pulled his rifle down and looked toward the sky, using his hand to protect his eyes from the sun. “It’s a few hours past midday already. I don’t know how we’ve taken so long to get this far, but we did, and the sun will set in a few hours. Hopefully this is our spot, and we can head home.”

“If it is, getting back here won’t take much time. The road’s a short walk away, and if we can drive ninety-five percent of the way to their den, it won’t be that difficult to get back out here,” Don said.

Noah nodded. “It would have been nice to have known that before coming here, but that would have been impossible.”

“Like I said earlier—whatever scouting thing we’re on should be the hardest part,” Doug said, beginning to walk toward the house. “After that, we can drive back and forth in Don’s truck and enjoy the heated seats the whole time.
