Muted sunlight slipped through the partially open blinds, rays falling across Laurelâs face. Val pushed a lock of chestnut hair away from her mouth, and then lightly traced her lower lip with her thumb where a small smile formed. âMorning.â
Laurel opened her eyes and wiped a hand across them. âHi.â
Val kissed Laurel, her heart melting with each tender caress. She was sure sheâd never get tired of looking into those eyes, the color of spring grass. âHowâd you sleep?â
Smirking, Laurel ran a finger along Valâs jawline. âLike a rock. I think you wore me out.â
Val laughed. âI wore you out? I think itâs the other way around.â
âMy part required a little effort, if I do say so myself.â
âYour part was outstanding.â Val smiled and then caught Laurelâs bright green eyes. âNo one has ever been able to read my desire the way you do.â She sighed. Her eyes followed the dip in her shirt that exposed Laurelâs collarbone. She reached out and let her finger glide across it and enjoying the shiver it elicited. âLaurel, Iâve never let anyone as close to me as Iâve let you.â
Laurel reached out and ran a hand down her arm.
âI donât just mean physically. I mean in here.â She pointed to her head. âAnd here.â She pointed to her heart.
Laurel leaned up on an elbow. âWhy?â
Val let her fingers trail small circles on Laurelâs side. She tried to put her thoughts into some sensible order. How can I explain my inadequacies and fear? âIâve spent my life trying to gain some form of control. Control I didnât have as a child, control I didnât have in Iraq, and control I still donât have over the memories. Iâve never let anyone close because Iâm afraid.â
âAfraid of what?â
Val rolled over onto her back and put a hand over her eyes. âAfraid of what I could do. You saw how close I came to flashing. If Iâm,â she stopped and paused for a long moment collecting her thoughts. âIf Iâm not in control, I could hurt you.â She choked back a sob. âI hurt Tess, physically. If I ever did anything like that to you, it would kill me.â
Laurel reached up and placed her palm against Valâs cheek and lifted Valâs hand. She held it in hers. âIâve seen your episodes. Iâm more afraid of not being there than I am of you hurting me. Iâm tougher than I look. Let me be there for you.â
âI have no doubt about how tough you are.â Val kissed her hand. âIâm trying, Laurel, I really am.â
âThatâs all I can ask. Now, as much as Iâd love to stay in bed with you all day, how about we find our way to the coffee I smell?â
Val rolled over and kissed her again. âIf we must.â She took a deep breath, pulling in the buttery aroma of Lizâs favorite Kona bean Val knew she ground herself. âIt does smell good. She orders it from a single source bean roaster in Hawaii. Liz isnât extravagant about much, but coffee? Sheâs a snob.
