How many sketches there are whose attribution is uncertain, which are the joint work, so to speak, of the two painters! Certain pictures by Fragonard, The See-Saw, for example, or Blind Man’s Bluff, would be acknowledged as Boucher’s were it not for the signature inscribed by the engraver at the base of the engraved reproductions. Contemporary taste has vainly sought to elevate the pupil at the expense of the master; Fragonard’s colour, it should never be forgotten, was fathered by the art of Boucher.
