Arman took him by the hand and left the main palace, heading directly toward the adjacent army headquarters, ignoring all of the strange looks they garnered on the way. Due to the wine and the whole situation, it was now mid-morning, so they saw a number of people as they traversed the hallways. Ren greeted them as they passed, acting as if nothing were wrong, even though his heart thumped so hard it threatened to leave his chest altogether.

He’d said yes in the heat of the moment and with Arman’s pressure, but now, outside of that room, he had to wonder all over again: Was this right? Was he insane to agree to this? Just because they were friends, and had good chemistry in bed, didn’t mean they’d automatically have a successful marriage. Part of Ren feared going ahead with this, as it had the potential to blow up painfully in their faces. Arman didn’t even have a good understanding of what it would mean for them both, to have a man as a partner.

And yet…oh gods, and yet the possibility of having Arman was far too enticing. Ren had harbored secret fantasies over the years of being with Arman, but never like this, never with them officially bound together by laws and oaths. He’d never even considered the possibility. It spoke deeply to Ren’s psyche, tantalizingly, offering him exactly what he never imagined he could have. Ren wanted it so badly he nearly shook under the force of the desire. It scared him all over again, because this had to be a dream. A cruel dream, showing him what he wanted, if only he had the courage to accept it.

Only Arman’s grip on him kept Ren sane and grounded. The hand in his held him firmly, not allowing any possibility of escape. The ring on Ren’s finger pressed against his skin, a tactile reminder. Arman said he’d had it made two years ago. It shouldn’t surprise him that Arman would make preparations that far back. He was always one to be prepared when he decided to go through with something. But still, the idea that he had worn that ring on his pinky for two years, just waiting for the time he could put it on Ren, tugged sharply on Ren’s heartstrings, and Ren held on to that. Maybe this was new and sudden to him, but not to Arman; if the man had spent two years planning this, then he certainly had considered what he was getting into.

They went straight through the side entrance and up into the general’s quarters. Robert had laundry out on the main table he was folding when they came in. He took in the sight of their clasped hands and obvious relief flashed across his face.

Arman only paused long enough to give Ren a quick look, to make sure he hadn’t changed his mind and would bolt, then turned to Robert. “The paperwork.”

“Of course, sir.”

With that order issued, Arman ducked into the next room, presumably to change out of yesterday’s clothes.
