The story from the other side of the fence sounded no better. In fact Idris Pierce’s version of the same story has a chilling quality to it:

On Monday, 16 September she and I had a quarrel. I should say that she gave me a look which I didn’t like, and I gave her a push. This was in our living room and she fell against a wall. She did not complain. She must have gone to our neighbours to complain because I saw her at their back door. I jumped over the fence and pulled her. She pretended to faint and I lifted her up and she grabbed the fence. She then fell on the fence and hurt her legs. We made up our quarrel but bad feeling started again between us on Monday, 23 September, when, upon my return from work she did not give me the usual kiss.
