“Surprise!” Haley and Lily gushed in unison when Tabitha opened the door.

Her sisters were both still dressed in their pajamas—Haley in demure polka dots and Lily’s decorated with tumbling puppy dogs who seemed to bear a striking resemblance to Max. Haley carried a cake stand with a beautifully frosted yellow cake sitting atop it, and Lily had an armful of gift bags.

Tabitha shook her head. “What’s going on here? It’s not even seven o’clock in the morning.”

“Hence our attire,” Haley said with an arch of her eyebrows.

“It’s a surprise Mother’s Day pajama party.” Lily flashed West a grin over Tabitha’s shoulder. “It was West’s idea. He wanted to surprise you.”

Haley’s eyes sparkled. “Did it work? Are you surprised?”

“Surprised would be an understatement.” Tabitha laughed and held the door open wide. “Come on in. Please. The boys aren’t even up yet.”

“Oh, that was intentional. You’re not lifting a finger this morning, hon. Zach and Zane’s aunties are here, and we’re getting the boys up and dressed and fed and all that jazz while you put your feet up and enjoy some cake for breakfast.” Haley set the cake plate down next to the ice bucket on the kitchen counter. “Did I mention the cake is mimosa flavored? Orange layer cake with silky champagne cream. Lily made it from scratch.”

Tabitha gasped. “You’re kidding. I don’t remember the GreatStore café serving anything that fancy back when you worked there, Lily.”

“That’s because this cake is special, just for you.” Her sister pulled a face. “But this is my first time trying the recipe, so no promises.”

Tabitha took a big inhale. “It smells fantastic. I’m sure it will be amazing.”

“Who wants mimosas? I’m ready to pour,” West said as he plucked the champagne bottle from the ice bucket.

Haley and Lily both raised their hands.

“Me too, most definitely,” Tabitha said.

“That’s a given. You get the first glass.” West handed her a champagne flute.

She took it but hesitated before taking a sip. “I’m pretty sure I hear the boys stirring in their room.”

“No worries. That’s our department today.” Haley bustled toward the nursery with Lily hot on her heels.

“Try and save us some cake and bubbly, though,” Lily shot over her shoulder.

“As if we could consume all of this by ourselves.” Tabitha laughed.

Her quiet morning was suddenly filled with the sounds of babbling babies and celebration and more joy than she’d ever thought possible to fit into her modest little cottage. It was such a stark contrast to Mother’s Day last year, when she’d been nine months pregnant with swollen ankles and practically on bed rest as she prepared to give birth to twins. As exciting as that time had been, it had also been bittersweet. A day hadn’t passed when Tabitha hadn’t mourned West. Not just for herself, but for her children. She’d thought they would never know their daddy...had been convinced she was all they’d ever have. Just her and the memories of the man who’d never even known they existed.

And now here they all were, together.
