Chapter Fifteen
âHester, I think Patsy has run away from home,â Rosalind said breathlessly as she leaned against the kitchen table.
âThe silly little maid. Itâs obvious where sheâm headed. I knew no good would come of her seeing the Yelland boy. He was always trouble.â
âDo you think sheâs eloped with Barnaby?â
âWhere else would she go?â
âMaybe she went to Greystone Park. She was a bit upset that I refused Sir Michaelâs offer of marriage.â
âQuite right too, in my humble opinion, Miss Rosalind. Youâm too good for him, even if heâs filthy rich.â
âMoney doesnât come into it, as far as Iâm concerned. I wouldnât marry a man I didnât love. Iâd rather die an old maid.â Rosalind looked up at the sound of footsteps and a shadow moved across the flagstones.
âIs anything wrong? You sounded anxious, Rosalind?â Piers entered through the door to the courtyard. âItâs such a beautiful morning I went for a stroll.â
âYou didnât happen to see my sister, did you?â
âThe only person I saw was Abe and we had a chat about strawberries. Apparently the fruit is almost ready for picking.â
âNever mind the strawberries,â Rosalind said impatiently. âI think Patsy has run away.â
âWhere would she go?â
âThatâs what we want to know, sir.â Hester poured boiling water into the teapot. âHave a nice cup of tea, Miss Rosalind. Itâll calm your nerves.â
âThank you, Hester,â Rosalind said absently. She met Piersâ gaze with a steady look. âAt best she might have gone to Greystone Park to see Christina, but Iâm afraid she might be planning to elope with the blacksmithâs son.â
Piers laughed. âIt sounds like something Aurelia would do.â
âItâs not funny. Barnaby is engaged to Lucy Warren, the wheelwrightâs daughter, and sheâs in the family way, not to put too fine a point on it. If you think you might have a scandal on your hands you ought to understand why Iâm so worried.â
Hester poured the tea and handed them each a cup. âMiss Patricia is under age. No vicar in his right mind would perform the service.â
âPatsy was reading a novel where the hero and heroine eloped to Gretna Green. Sheâs very romantic.â
âAnd very young.â Piers placed his cup back on the table. âThereâs only one solution. Iâll go after them.â
âIâm coming with you,â Rosalind said hastily. âGreystone Park must be my first call. Iâll have Ajax saddled and Iâll go there now.â
âAnd if she isnât there? What will you do then?â
âIâll think about that later.â
âI have a better idea. Iâll have my tilbury made ready. Itâs not as fast as the curricle, but I left that at Trevenor. If your sister isnât at Greystones weâll drive on and try to catch them up.â
Rosalind could see the sense of this argument and she nodded. âAll right, if youâre sure?â
âIâm quite sure.â Piers hurried from the kitchen.
âIf I was a betting woman Iâd put my money on Gretna Green,â Hester said grimly. âMiss Patricia wouldnât get much sympathy from Sir Michael. I reckon heâd send her home straight away if only to get into your good books, poppet.
