Mom's cancer took her quicker than any of us expected.
One minute she was cooking dinner and the next she had collapsed on the floor.
Dad put her on life support until my Medzmama and aunties could come in from Turkey.
I stayed by her bedside every day, watching the numbers on the monitor.
"Mama, can you hear me?" I whispered.
I was going on hour thirty without sleep. I was afraid if I drifted off that she'd pass, even on life support.
Mama's eyes opened and they looked right at me, but there was no life left in those beautiful brown orbs. She was already gone.
"Mama, if you can hear me, I want you to know..." My voice cracked and I licked my lips.
"I want you to know that I'm sorry for being a disappointment. I'm going to back to school this time, I promise. I'm signed up for classes at DePaul for next fall. Maybe I'll join the Armenian student union and meet a nice man, then Papa can walk me down the aisle and you'll watch over me."
The tears freely fell from my cheeks.
I hated to cry. It always ruined my makeup, but ever since Mama got her diagnosis, I could cry at the drop of a hat. I learned to wear waterproof mascara since I never knew when I would burst into tears.
The door swung open and in walked my mom's two sisters from Turkey and following behind them, holding onto my father's arm, was my Medzmama.
"Medzmama," I said, approaching her and kissing both of her cheeks.
"Still not married, I see," she said in her gravelly voice, frowning.
I blinked. I had no idea what I was even supposed to say to that.
"Your mother would have loved to see a wedding." Medzmama sighed.
Dad patted Medzmama's arm. "Let's not talk about that right now, Mama."
He forced a weak smile and I nodded, backing up so that Medzmama and my aunties could say goodbye to my mom.
The doctor came in shortly after and removed life support. She was gone almost instantly, her eyes closing ever so softly.
All my tears had been cried out. I said all of the things I wanted to say, except for one thing.
I leaned over and gently kissed my mother's cheek. "I love you, Mama."
She was the first person I ever said those words to and I thought she would always be the last.
Brick loved me.
Holy shit.
He'd said it not just once in a drunk fit or midorgasm, but twice when he thought I was asleep.
What would my mom think of him?
Worse...my dad?
I couldn't be in love with a guy like Brick. He
was rough and had a background in stripping and playing small town football. But he was also kind. And loving. And giving. All of the things I could ever want in a husband.
But not what my father would want in a suitor for his only daughter.
He would take one look at the six-foot-three inch behemoth of a man, ask if he had any Turkish in him, and then dismiss him as a suitor before he could get a word in edgewise.
