Chapter Nine

Raine awoke first. He went into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and reached for his razor and shaving cream. A rustle from the bed could be heard from the bathroom. Skye would soon be up, and they would have to head home shortly after her waking. Raine slowly worked out the stiffness in his right shoulder so he could continue to shave. The bed was nice and suitable for a Bed and Breakfast establishment, but it wasn’t kind on Raine’s bones. The stiffness was also a reminder that he was getting older and finding it more and more difficult to handle the stress of being a Rom Barro of The Kersh Clan.

Raine never regretted his life or roots and didn’t feel he ever missed out on anything, but there were days when he wished he didn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders. On those days, the ones he felt the most selfish, he longed to become as irresponsible as other mortals. Just once, Raine wanted to know what it would feel like to throw caution to the wind and give in to what feels right rather than giving into responsibility. Those weak moments were not as few and far between as they used to be, especially now that Skye was back in his life, but that never meant he wasn’t grateful for his roots.

He was glad that his parents passed their traditions and powers onto him. It was just the responsibility of making sure the mortals and immortals could coexist peacefully that was starting to wear thin on him. The burden in the physical and mental sense was clearly apparent with each crick and crack of his bones.

He felt just as much of a sense of duty as his clan did. They were always there to do what the gods intended, hunting down any immortal that refused to keep the peace. But the lifetimes of strife seemed to be just as long as the ongoing war he had with the Vlad Clan. The stress was starting to make him grow into a crabby and bitter old man. Two personality traits that don’t suit a relatively young man in his late 30s.

His mother warned him of this bitterness when he was allowed to take over the family business. He ignored her speech at the time. He was young, stupid, and thought he had something to prove. He’d spend many sleepless nights hunting and disregarding the persuasion from his body to slow down. In reality, he really didn’t need to impress anyone. His magical powers were just as strong as anyone in the Kersh Clan. But what he did have, was an ego to stroke.

It had been quite some time since he had thought about his mother. She chose to exit this lifetime early. She developed breast cancer at 52 and died two days before her 53rd birthday. She was home until the last month of her life and spent her last days in the cancer wing at the hospital.
