Chapter 6

Jason was eating in the cafeteria alone. His headache from when he woke up several hours ago had gone away but he was so hungry. Jason ate in the empty forty seat cafeteria and reflected on the past day. He thought, the closer they took me to downtown Chicago the more intense the ringing in my ears got and then I blacked out. I wake up to find that doctor, Tracy looking over me. I go through hours of medical tests but she can’t find anything medically wrong with me. What is happening to me?

Jason just stared at the table and ate his second main course of chicken stew realizing he had no clue but he had to keep his mind clear like his father had taught him since he was twelve. He started focusing on his breathing, filling up his stomach first and then letting the air fill his lungs. The confusion in his mind started to fight for attention but he kept focusing on his breathing. He thought, I accept what happen to me versus resisting it. I don’t need answers right now, just a peace and gratitude I am healthy.

For the next few minutes he only thought of his breathing but then he heard footsteps walking towards him and turned to see Ashley.

Ashley walked up next to him with a bottle of water and smiled.

Ashley said, “Good to see you’re ok.”

Jason look right into Ashley’s eyes and said, “I was starving after I woke up.”

Jason made sure to look her straight in the eye because she was wearing a tight black T-Shirt that revealed more of her figure that he had seen before. Jason tried to focus on his breathing but he was excited she was talking to him but also nervous about his feelings that he wanted her to like him. Jason thought, I know I could make her laugh. She looks like she needs to laugh. Jason could see a look of worry in her eyes for him. He thought, is she concerned about me? Why would she even care?

Jason was done eating and stood up. He wanted to speak with her about so many things but the first impression he made with her didn’t go well. He thought, turn and walk away. Then he remembered David’s words of wisdom about how important it was to work together as a team whose lives depended on each other.

Jason thought, don’t try to be funny, just tell her the truth.

Jason said, “I gave you those flowers as a sincere thank you for saving my life.”

Ashley looked at Jason with a neutral facial expression and nodded.

Jason said, “You were right. I apologize, I pictured you naked once, well maybe twice, so no more of that. Sorry.”

Ashley thought, he is honest but he has no filter.

Jason started to walk away but he remembered he was supposed to show Ashley he could block a punch and prove he was a survivor that could stand up and dish it out too.
