Okay, to say that went badly would be an understatement.

Maybe…

Maybe I do need to alter my approach. Maybe being super forceful isn’t the way to go.

It’s only that I’m not really very good at being, you know, flattering and charming and a nice guy. But I spend all of the rest of the week thinking about it, and on Friday, I come in for my shift early, so that I’ll be able to run into Apple.

When she sees me, her eyes get wide, but I also see how her chest rises and falls and her cheeks get a little red, and I don’t think it’s a negative reaction to seeing me, not exactly.

I go to her, and I tell her, in a quiet voice that I want to apologize privately, and can she meet me later?

She seems flustered having me close, and she looks around the kitchen, at everyone else who’s working there, none of whom are paying us any mind, and she says, “My office.” She turns on her heel and walks away.

I follow her, excited at the prospect of making out with her on her desk or something.

But when I get in there, she makes me close the door and then folds her arms over her chest and says, “Okay. Apologize.”

Right. I take a deep breath. “Look, I maybe came on a little strong. I shouldn’t have come to your house.”

“No,” she says. “You shouldn’t have. But, see, this is the thing, Blake, you’re a kid, and these emotions that you’re feeling, they’re new and overwhelming. You don’t know how to deal with them, and that’s something you need to be working through with someone your own age. I thought that Idleman girl from the hardware store was your girlfriend or something.”

“She’s not.” I shake my head. “And… come on, Apple. Just because I’m young doesn’t mean that what I’m feeling isn’t real.”

“That’s not what I said,” she says. She sighs. “I only mean… you might not realize it, Blake, but you can be… intimidating.”

I fold my arms over my chest. This isn’t going well. “I don’t mean to be.” I sound sulky. Fuck. Why am I screwing this up so bad?

“I know you don’t,” she says. “Which is why I’m trying to tell you, gently, to take it down a notch. And I’m not interested, okay? I-I also mean that gently. You’re a very talented boy. The cooking you do here is amazing. And I do think you’re attractive as well. So, I don’t mean it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with you and everything right. But you need to forget about me.”

I’m not sure what to say to this. I take several deep breaths, imagining knocking her desk over, smashing her computer screen. Instead, I make my voice even and low. “When you kissed me—”

“A mistake.”

“It didn’t feel that way to me.”

“I know I screwed up, Blake,” she says. “I need to apologize to you, too. I’m the adult here, and I behaved badly.”

“No.” I clench both my hands into fists.
