Chapter Nineteen
Lily
Lily pulled into the drive and a shiver of excitement ran up the length of her spine. She’d managed to arrange some cover at the salon for a change and that meant she’d had time to go to the store and grab something special for supper. She rarely had time to cook for Dalton and Connor anymore, let alone Ethan, and the thought of the once arduous task now filled her with contentment as she collected the groceries from the back seat. Juggling the bags between her hands, she pushed her key into the lock and leaned against the entrance.
To her shock, the wooden front door fell open without Lily so much as turning the key, and Lily fought to keep her balance as the doorway to their house opened out in front of her.
What the fuck? Why was the door open? But the low sense of dread in her stomach warned her at once that something wasn’t right. Ethan would have been the last one out of the house that morning on his way to a prospective exhibitor, and there’s no way he’d have left the house unlocked.
No way at all.
Dropping the groceries onto the doorstep, Lily moved tentatively inside. Her heart was pounding as she glanced around, all of her senses heightened while she took in the look of the scene. Her mother’s old dresser which had sat proudly in their hallway for years displaying a number of the family’s photographs was the first thing that caught her attention. The drawers were open, and a few of the photograph frames had been thrown to the floor, the smashed glass littering their expensive carpet a few feet from where she stood.
Something was wrong. Something was very wrong, and Lily’s throat dried as that realization washed over her.
Ethan!
The panicky thought left her mind like a reflex as she stared around her home. Wherever her eyes traveled Lily could see evidence of some sort of intrusion. The door to the family room was open, and she could see the doors of their display cabinet wide open.
Little one? What is it?
Her husband’s voice reverberated around Lily’s mind like a warm, familiar security blanket.
Something’s wrong, her thoughts told him. The house is a mess; the front door was open… Lily hesitated as she tried to assimilate everything she could see around her. Oh shit, Ethan, I think we’ve been burgled!
What? He practically screamed the thought at her. Are you okay? Are the bastards still there?
Lily swallowed. She could feel the emotion gathering in her chest and swelling, threatening to provoke tears at any moment.
I don’t think so. I… I’m not sure.
Call the police.
Lily blinked at the command. It was such a bizarre thing for Ethan to demand, even in the circumstances.
But, sir—
Do it, Lily. We’ve been robbed and you might still be in danger.
That was a command and her body responded in the way it always did when her husband instructed her—with heady arousal.
I’m on my way home with Connor, but I’m still a few minutes away.
