Chapter Six

It took several seconds for Scotty to realize the ringing wasn’t coming from his new phone. He wasn’t sure why he still carried his old one around. He should have shut it off and put it away, but he’d been so preoccupied with Mitch that he hadn’t thought of that.

Right now Mitch was on his own phone in the kitchen talking to someone. Scotty hadn’t asked because it hadn’t been any of his business.

Scotty was in the backyard with Patches, sitting on one of the lounge chairs, soaking up the sun while the dog rested by his feet. He pulled his phone out and looked at the caller ID.

There wasn’t a name. He started to ignore the call, but what if it was Randolph? His brother had his number, and it might be him. What if Randolph was worried about him? They hadn’t talked in over two weeks, but it was possible Randolph heard about Scotty not returning to Franklin’s and wanted to know where Scotty was.

He couldn’t let his brother worry about him.

“Hello?”

“What kind of game are you playing? Are you shacking up with that fucking cop? What have you told him?”

Scotty’s insides froze, his chest constricting at the sound of Franklin’s low, menacing voice. He only used that tone when he was really, really mad.

Scotty was thankful he wasn’t at home. With that tone, it always meant he was about to get his butt kicked.

“I’m not playing any games,” Scotty said, wishing he’d never answered the dang phone. He could have just hung up, but that would make matters worse.

It didn’t matter that Mitch was a bear shifter or his mate. It didn’t matter that he now lived with the sheriff. If Franklin wanted to get to him, the man would, and Scotty didn’t need to make him madder.

“Then bring your ass home,” Franklin demanded. “That cop is only using you. Once he’s done having fun, he’ll toss you out on the street.”

Scotty sat up, looking toward the house. Patches lifted his head, staring at him as if wondering what was going on.

“Mitch wouldn’t do that.” He wanted to tell his uncle about Mitch, about how they were mates, but something held him back. Maybe it was the fear of sassing Franklin, or it could have been the fact that people didn’t know about shifters and Scotty wasn’t going to spill the beans. There was nothing his uncle could say that would make Scotty betray Mitch.

Even if there was a kernel of doubt in the back of his mind. He really didn’t know Mitch. They’d just met, and the guy had been really kind to him, but they’d only known each other for two days.

Even so, Scotty trusted Mitch and refused to believe his mate would toss him out on the street.

“You have until tonight to return,” Franklin said. “If you don’t come home, I’m dragging you back here.”

“Why?” Scotty asked, his voice sounding a little desperate. He didn’t care. He couldn’t understand why his uncle wanted him home.
