Mrs. Annie Kels never remarried, remaining in the Lodi area until her death in 1977. Her daughter Laverne became a best-selling novelist and her son, John, a first lieutenant in the Air Force, receiving the distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 at twenty-years of age. As of 2012, Laverne’s daughter, Janis, served on the board for Murder Victims’ Families for Reconciliation and was also the organization’s liaison for California Crime Victims for an Alternative to the Death Penalty.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

On June 23, 1924, Captain of Guard Patrick J. Cochrane was inspecting the rock quarry when a cable snapped and the masthead, or boom, of a derrick broke free.
