Chapter thirteen

It was interesting to Corwin what questions the king didn’t bother to ask, while there were gods there, in the room, to openly discuss things with him. There was no thought toward the meaning of life, or what was actually real, and what might be mere illusion to the eyes of men. Instead, the man stroked his mustache a lot, then tried to find out what would be happening over the next year or two, in a moment by moment fashion.

Horne didn’t even deflect, just telling the man that kind of information was forbidden. A thing that normally wasn’t going to come up, since they weren’t allowed to talk to him in other than vague ways, regardless.

Dolla on the other hand was far more interested in how the gods worked than anyone else there was. Well, Corwin was interested in that, he had to allow, but Jamis and the King both pressed him to find out what the gods could provide to them. Meaning that they were left frustrated and tired at the end, the morning meal having been skipped, with tea and some small edibles brought. Not that Corwin had been given time to do anything like eat.

At noon, they stopped however, the King finally standing.

“Thank you all for coming. This was... Fascinating. We can do this again, soon? With some time to prepare, perhaps I can provide better questions? Write things down first, so I don’t forget what I wish to petition you for? Also, we have enough guidance for the moment to show at least what areas we need to work on, which is much better than not knowing such things.”

Horne sighed, but nodded. Volan and Marrow were both standing back, discussing how to provide information to their people, as to what they needed to be doing, and Tomey paced, to the right, fretting a bit. The red glowing form stomped and huffed, seeming angry that the men there weren’t understanding what he wanted them to. Not properly.

Finally as they all bowed and the king and his man left the space, not telling Corwin what he was supposed to be doing at all, the god of war moved over to him, and spoke, his voice tight.

“This will be unlike other wars, or might be. We aren’t in communication with that sect, as individuals, not in an official fashion, so that we won’t cross contaminate our methods. They’re far more open with what they will aid their people with, which, to our thinking for Laris, is a flaw, but we don’t yet understand if these people will be facing gods directly or not on the battlefield. Certainly, the other side will have more magic, and it will be more powerful, in many ways. We could make that kind of change for the people here. Any of us could do that. Time is short for them to do that for themselves, however.”

Taking a deep breath, Corwin responded, out loud.

“What is my part in getting everyone prepared?”

Oddly, Dolla, the high leader of their church turned to him and spoke.
