Chapter 18

Charly - Day 45

Rip had taken the next shift at the front of the property to give himself time to calm down after his fight with Derrick. I was sitting on the ground, my holstered knife attached to my jeans and my Glock lying on my lap, while resting my back against the knotted pine tree. I closed my eyes briefly and enjoyed the feel of the sun on my face; the mental picture of a big yellow ball rising high in the sky, spreading its warm glow over us, was comforting. If I closed my eyes long enough, I could pretend all was right in the world. That we didn’t have enemies sleeping in the same quarters as us, that there were no plans to attack a foreign military force, that my mom was waiting at home for my return, and Reese was safe at his military base in California.

My fantasy was rudely interrupted by the sound of a gunshot. Opening my eyes, I looked around and saw Terri and Zoey jump up from where they were sitting, and then Liannie and Michael ran toward the back of the property. Derrick’s group appeared in the doorway of the barn, their guns raised. I held my Glock, chambering a round as my head swiveled, searching for the danger I knew to be lurking.

Lori hurried over, almost dragging Chan to where I stood. “Charly, did the gunshot come from the back of the property?” she demanded.

“I think so, but I’m not sure. Michael and Liannie ran that way.”

Lori’s eyes were panicked. “Bill, he’s the one on watch in the back, right?”

Chan beat me to the answer. “Yes, Bill replaced Joe on watch.”

I watched Joe make his way toward the back of the property, a worried look on his face, his revolver in his right hand.

“Is that Keegan making that awful noise?” Chan asked.

It took just a moment for my ears to pick up what Chan had obviously heard. A moment passed, then a cacophony of screaming mingled with crying caught our attention. Keegan came into view, running toward the barn.

“Mama!” Keegan screamed as he fell to the ground, picked himself up, and half stumbled as he tried to run faster.

Derrick intercepted him, grabbing him by his arm and whipping him around. “What happened, boy?” Derrick shook him when Keegan failed to answer. “What’s going on?”

Big Mo appeared at the barn door and ran to her son, her arms spread wide as Derrick released him and Keegan collapsed into her embrace. I was growing impatient, Derrick even more so as he paced back and forth. Buck made his way over to where Derrick was standing, looked quizzically at Keegan, then back at Derrick, who just shrugged in response.

Grumbling, Buck stalked off toward the back of the property. “I’m going to see for myself.” However, he barely made it two steps when a blood-soaked Michael appeared, Liannie following him as he carried Bill, his right arm dangling too low from his body to be properly attached.
