Chapter 14-Nan’s Dilemma

Term was progressing well, and the new girls were beginning to meld into the wider school and because, for the moment, everything was going just as it should, Nan was beginning to find that her personal concerns were coming more to the fore. She had not forgotten her mistakes with the farm visit and was determined to think things through and put right her errors.

In order to fully understand Nan’s problems, it is necessary to go back some way to explain her past. Even as adults, it is easy to judge people on the decisions they make (or do not make) without considering the reasons why they might have made those decisions.

It was the night after the Thirds’ “Good Deed” escapade. Nan had reached a point in her thinking where felt that she could no longer continue in her role as Head Mistress without addressing in her own mind the difficulties she was encountering. She was beginning to believe that to use the title in relation to her role in the school was misleading and she was determined to come to some decision about what should be done in the best interests of the girls whose parents were paying her to educate.

In her room, the sash window was open at the top and the pretty floral curtains were closed. Nan Bonnington puffed up her pillows, adding a large square French pillow which she used when she sat up in bed to read. Her cup of tea in its dainty cup and saucer was on her bedside table. The lamp next to it was alight, but in the large room the light it made didn’t go far and the rest of the room faded into shadow.

Nan always kept a pad of paper and pencil on the table, beside which was her Bible. She read her Bible every morning and usually managed to read the whole book every year, so she was familiar with many of its words. Added to this, she had a personal relationship with the God of the Bible, and His Son, Jesus. Since childhood she had talked to God in the same way that she talked to others, although usually no one would know that she was praying.

And now she knew that she had problems on her hands which she was unable to solve with her own experience. Reviewing the two years since she had opened the school Nan settled down to be as honest as it was able for her to be.

Born into an extremely wealthy family, she had been brought up in Flockford Manor. She had had no need to work, but living in the Manor which had historically provided employment and help for those living in Flockford in whatever way it could, Nan had grown up with a belief that she had an obligation to ensure the best for the villagers. So, she had become used to visiting the sick, helping with village fetes, supporting those with various problems and finding work for those who might not find work easily elsewhere.
