"I told you, I'm fine. The doctor thinks I might have pulled a muscle in my neck, so I need to take it easy for a few days. Everything else is just bruises. I'm fine."
"Someone ran you off the road." Cord bit off each word. "You are not fine."
"I'm still walking and talking. And breathing, which is the most important of all. They were probably drunk or something."
"That's not what Matt thinks," Jody said from behind Cord, wringing zir hands together. "You should have seen his face when he got that call. I've never seen a man run away from me so fast. He wasn't going to let anything stop him from getting to you."
"He was with you? Did he come to ask more questions? That should have been the other guy. Why was he there? Where were you? I thought you'd left the library and gone to dinner. What happened?"
Jody let out a laugh. "Relax, Lou. The doctors are going to kick us out if they think we're riling you up."
"Not telling me what is going on is riling me up."
"I ran into Mx. O'Dell and Ms. Williams outside the diner," Matt said, stepping into the room. "I had just let zir know Officer Weixel had more questions about zir relationship with Mr. Peterson when I got the call from Mrs. Collier."
"She called you directly?" That didn't really matter. "That means you know ze didn't run me off the road. That takes Jody off the suspect list, right?"
Jody let out a little cough. "Only if they're convinced your accident was because of all this. If what you said is true, and it was a drunk driver, then the two have nothing to do with each other. And I'm still right where I was."
"You can relax about that, Mx. O'Dell."
Jody perked up, glancing toward Liam Weixel, who stood in the doorway. "You cleared me?"
"I wouldn't go that far,â Liam said. âUnless you and your father are lying to me, you have the least of the motives for wanting Mr. Peterson dead."
"I didn't," Jody said. "Want him dead, I mean. I just wanted him to leave town. He wouldn't admit it, but I'm sure Dad sent him to try to get me to come back. He's done it before, when I lived closer. It wasn't going to work this time, either. I didn't need to kill Sam, though, to get him to leave. I just needed to out stubborn him, which I've always managed to easily do."
"Why did your dad want you to come back?" I asked zir. "Was something going on?"
âHe figures he can control me if I'm close by,â Jody said. âI won't be able to embarrass him then. Because that's the reason I'm open about my identity. It's all about him."
Matt gave a snort, and I looked at him. "Did you have more questions?" Then, I remembered the other officer. "Why are you here? We donât know my accident had anything to do with the murder." Although if so, from what Matt said, it would clear Jody.
