THATCHER MURMURS INTO the pillow, “I need to go.”

Terry’s hand drifts to the fine hairs covering Thatcher’s ass cheeks that are matted with sweat. “Okay,” Terry says, because he is sure that he should say something.

“Tomorrow’s Game Day.” Thatcher finds his phone, and his handsome face is momentarily the bluish center of all creation as he checks the time. “We can hang out afterwards.”

From the bed, Terry watches the figure of Thatcher move about the room, searching for his clothes.

“Shit.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t find my t-shirt,” Thatcher says.

“Turn on the light.”

“No. I’ll get it another time.”

Terry wonders if he should try and kiss Thatcher goodbye, but the gesture seems both awfully trite after what they’ve done, and portentous. Instead he offers a monosyllabic word so unremarkable that he forgets whether he said, “Thanks” or “Yeah.”

When he’s alone, Terry kicks off the bedsheet, because it’s damp and cold in spots where things spilled. A tremendous whisper is building at the back of his head, though he’s not sure if it’s a secret or not. He suspects the whisper is a warning, though.

Despite the late hour he texts his brother: Do you ever have regrets? I mean after sex.

He’s surprised by the quick response until he remembers it’s a Saturday night, and likely Zeke is still awake and about.

Sometimes. I remain the optimist and next time will be better. Why???

Terry appreciates the answer before the question.

Tell you later, is all he can manage.
