It was after midnight when Versie woke up and realized she had forgotten to take her reflux medicine, the acid already doing backflips in her chest. Reaching over to the nightstand for a light, her hand touched the wig that Dolores had bought her just before she began chemo treatment. Her fingers followed up the lamp’s pipe until finding its knob. Versie turned on the light, then brought her hand back to settle on her chest. She stood up and reached over to the chair for her robe and put it on, her stomach none too settled either.

Versie’s frame of eighty years creaked as she moved down the hallway, passing the room where her only daughter slept. Dolores had moved back home several years ago after divorcing. It upset Versie at the time, but now she tensed up at the thought of not having her daughter to rely on at home during cancer treatment.

Slowly she descended the steps and crossed the foyer on her way to the kitchen where she had all her medications laid out on the table. Walking by the large bay window that looked out over the front yard she glimpsed the movement of a shadow and faint light outside. Moving closer, she strained to catch a ghost-like image of a man. Hunched over and wearing a helmet light, the figure paced the lawn with a large canister in his hands. Versie jumped, momentarily imagining her deceased husband before her illusion gave way to worry. She told herself to go upstairs and wake her daughter, but before she could move, the man crept between two evergreens at the edge of the lawn and disappeared. Versie stayed at the window and stared into the darkness, the acid collecting in her throat.
