Chapter 7

Zoe

Daylight and Twilight were the two times of day in Aravot, and the shift between them was the only way we knew transition of time in the mortal realm.

Twilight was so subtle however, that most days, we hardly noticed transitions at all. Except when we were looking forward to something like tonight.

Nova seemed better. Spirits high, her wound appeared to be healing. Though her skin had a strange grey cast to it, her aura didn’t appear to be affected.

As there were often few things to celebrate in our lives and even less time for celebration, we took moments when we could. We were having a dinner party of sorts. The Elders, EMC and my Gemini were all meeting for the three Ds: dinner, dancing, and drinking.

A knock on my door pulled me from my inner ramblings as I readied myself for this evening’s celebration.

“Come in.”

Footsteps echoed through my chamber, and Cade’s heartbeat grew louder as he approached, coming to escort me to the party.

As I put the final touches on my make-up and hair, Cade’s reflection appeared in my bathroom mirror.

Dapper and fine as always, Cade was actually wearing earth fashion today, and not his usual Genesis uniform. Donned in a pair of relaxed grey slacks and an indigo button-down shirt, his sleeves were rolled halfway up his strong arms and a light bristle of ebony hair peeked out from beneath the buttons.

A rush of emotion pushed through me as I withheld my desire, telling myself now was not the time to be needy.

Cade set his hands on my hips, inciting the usual rush of tingles forcing through my body. Earlier was the first time in weeks that we’d converged, so the flash of energy and excitement was so strong, my eyes fell shut and my breath hitched in his adoring embrace.

“You look stunning as always, my love.” His warm breath blew across my neck as his lips dipped and touched my skin, soft and effortless. “A complete Convergence is upon us, yeah?”

“Yes, darling.” I barely managed the words. My body was lit, electricity rushing through me, blazing from my head to my fingertips, down to my toes which were secretly curling into the floor. “It’s been a while. My essence has missed you terribly.”

“Mine, too.”

To anyone looking on, our relationship probably appeared lukewarm at best most of the time. After many millennia together, however, looks were deceiving.

Although the relationship Cade and I shared had been nurtured to a point of comfortable predictability, that didn’t mean it was any less loving or passionate.

Cade taught me how to love. And then we had Nova.

Peppering kisses along my neck, his hands pressed firmly into my hips for a moment before running his fingertips up and down my sides until he reached my hair, pushing it over my other shoulder.

Gently repositioning my neck to the side, his hands braced my shoulders, and his lips slid to the soft swell behind my ear. Grazing my earlobe with his teeth, he pulled it gingerly into his mouth, tugging lazily.
