Chapter 10
6 Months Prior â Just after Luke and Lorelaiâs First Night
Nothing is free, not in this world, and not in the spiritual world from which I was born. There is a cost to everything, and Luke was just now beginning to experience the unknown cost of loving me. Intimacy with the immortal was unlike anything else a man or woman could ever hope to experience. Iâd always wondered why, in Godâs divine plan, he had made such an act so pleasurable. The angelic realm was forbidden from such activities, but nothing was more satisfying for either man or angel than this forbidden union. What Iâd just given Luke was better than anything heâd ever known before. The extent to which it exceeded all else in his life wasnât as clear to him, but the seeds were already planted and would be taking root.
Love is already so all-consuming in the hearts of man, but lust â the kind of lust he would have nagging and aching in the back of his mind â that kind of lust would leave him unable to focus on anything if he were apart from me. He was late to work that morning after I turned off his alarm, but the real challenge would begin over the next few days as he found his thoughts fixed on me. It would feel like love. Luke was a stronger man than most. As the days went by, I expected him to begin falling apart, but he held himself together. The signs of his building anxiety were apparent to me long before he admitted anything was wrong, but that in itself showed more strength than Iâd expect from most. As weak as I was going to make him, Luke would be a fine specimen to have started with. He had the quality of a strong leader and I would put all that to good use!
As we approached the two-week mark since first sleeping together, I knew that I needed to help things along some. We planned a date for Friday night, but I made up excuses that would keep us apart for a few nights leading up to the weekend. The separation would force him into a deeper withdrawal and might finally break him down.
I didnât actually leave him alone, of course. I spent many hours there in his office, observing how he was handling our time apart. Every day was better than the last. Luke checked the clock more frequently, was all over my social
