After the Arrest
Sayer said he was the first to interview William Sandeson following his arrest on August 18, 2015, and into the early morning hours of August 19. This interview took place before Corporal Jody Allison arrived and the two started their good cop/bad cop charade, and before Sandeson started talking about Morphsuited intruders bursting into his apartment to kill Taylor Samson.
Sayer told the court Sandeson was polite, very quiet, and calm, appearing to be paying attention to everything that was being put to him. The Crown then began playing the video of Sandeson being interviewed for the jury.
When the video begins it is 9:41 P.M. on August 18. Sandeson is in the interrogation room alone. There are two chairs in the room, but they are both empty. He’s lying on the floor on his stomach, face down. Within a couple of minutes, Constable Jason Shannon enters the room, takes Sandeson’s particulars, and tells him he’s under arrest for kidnapping, trafficking, and misleading the police. He was never actually charged with those offences.
William Sandeson remains calm as Constable Shannon reads him his rights and asks if he wishes to call a lawyer. He says “yes.” The two leave together at 9:47 P.M. and come back at 10:20 P.M.
In the video Sandeson is again alone, his head in his hands.
Detective Constable Sayer enters the room at 10:27 P.M. Only short snippets of the conversation were played for the jury, the remainder having been deemed inadmissible. The judge told the jury they should not guess or speculate about what had been removed or why.
The publication ban on that material has now been lifted.
The interview shows Sandeson in that same empty interrogation room.
“I want you to know, William, I’ve been part of this investigation from the beginning. I’m one of the officers that’s taking the lead in this investigation,” Sayer begins. “I had an opportunity to see almost everything that was done in relation to this investigation and I’ve been doing this stuff for a long time, William.”
Sandeson sits, nodding as Sayer explains that many officers are working on the case putting together the pieces of the puzzle.
“I’m a firm believer, William, that people make choices in their life, and when they do sometimes they’re good choices and sometimes they’re bad. Does that mean that good people can make bad choices? Yeah, it can.”
Sandeson remains silent.
“After putting all these pieces of the puzzle together, there’s no doubt in my mind that you were involved in what happened to Taylor. There’s no doubt.”
Sayer explains that he doesn’t think Sandeson is evil like many of the people he sees in this room. Using a sports analogy, he references the Toronto Blue Jays’s improbable winning streak in 2015, explaining no one player can do it all, but rather they each have a role on the team.
“You have a role in this file,” he tells Sandeson. “What I don’t know is how deep your role is.”
As it would again and again in this case, the conversation returns to William Sandeson’s chosen profession.
