A time will come when Folkví irrevocably will be a young woman no more. It’s hard to grasp, for there are moments, entire evenings sometimes, that refuse to end, when she seems almost to be trapped in frozen time.

When suddenly she decides to go back to Áslakr and Od, she breaks into a run, afraid they’ll be gone by the time she returns. Not until she reaches the headman’s yard does she slow into a walk, short of breath and bristling with an alertness that makes every impression stick. Some wizened white flowers border the foot of the house in the blue darkness, an occasional bird still sings, her bare feet in the grass now wet with dew, and there, as she rounds the side of the house, her hand following the wall, sit Áslakr and Od, still at the fire, drinking and laughing. Áslakr rises when he sees her, his face made dramatic by the dark shadows the firelight casts.
