Downtown Washington, DC
âHow is DC?â Cabot asked.
âOkay,â George replied in a hushed tone. He adjusted his smartphone closer to his mouth. âI forgot how humid it is here. Itâs weird being back. Doesnât feel like home anymore.â
âYou have been through so much recently.â
George sighed.
âHow is JD?â Cabot asked.
âGood. Heâs in the shower now, so we can talk.â
It had been ten days since theyâd left Virginia and flown back to Boston. Cabot and George had had the entire first-class row to themselves and were able to talk privately. Theyâd talked through the entire five-hour flight. George had asked Cabot a flurry of questions about TRENTON, which heâd answered with candor. Most of the conversation had centered on a plan that Cabot had devised.
âDid you find a place for the meeting, like we talked about?â Cabot asked.
âYeah, Henry⦠About that. I donât know. I donât think itâs gonna work. I know Taylor. Know what heâs capable of. He ainât gonna go for it. I still like my plan better.â
George got up off the sofa and walked to the bathroom door. The shower was still running, and he could hear JD singing, or rapping, or whatever it was he was doing. He would be in there for a while.
âIt will work, George. General Taylor is a villainous megalomaniac, but he will listen to reason. He is not stupid.â
âHeâs untethered,â George said. âThrough the looking glass. Heâs making his own rules now. He wonât listen.â
When it came to Taylor, George and Cabot agreed on one thing: that he was plotting to overthrow the government and establish himself as a military dictator. Where they differed was a reflection of their contrasting personalities. George was pragmatic, a man of action who viewed the world as black and white. Cabot was theoretical, an idea man who viewed the world in infinite shades of gray. George the realist, Cabot the idealist.
Occamâs Razor. The simplest solution is best. For George, it was that straightforward. He had a personal score to settle with Taylor, and he would do it with a sniper rifle. How history, or his country, viewed his actions was of little consequence to him.
Cabot, by contrast, embraced the complexities of life. The endless variables, hypotheses, and but/for causations of the learned mind. A man of staunch logic and reason.
Cabotâs plan reflected his sensibilities. He believed they now had the leverage needed to present Taylor with an ultimatum: He and President Parker must resign immediately, reinstate the secretary of education as head of government, and schedule a new populist presidential election. If not, they would expose him for the military dictator he was and force a recall presidential vote, where he would face an unbeatable candidate: the Father of the CountryâGeorge Washington himself!
âI donât like it,â George said. âAnd Iâm sure as hell not running for president. I donât want anyone to know about me. My past, who I am. Itâs nobodyâs business.â
âItâs a bluff, George.
