Chapter Ten
Sara
âDad!â I jump off Jamie and stand up, heart pounding.
But my fatherâs not even looking at me.
His eyes bore into Jamieâs, who stands up and immediately puts a protective arm around me.
Dadâs eyes widen, then his lip raises in a snarl. âGet your hands off my daughter, you fuckingâ¦shitbag!â He takes a step towards the stairs.
âShitbag?â Now, Jamie takes a step forward, crossing one arm protectively in front of me. âYou better watch your mouth, old buddy. Donât mistake this for something itâs not.â
My Dad stops his movement forward. âYouâ¦whaddaya mean, something itâs not? What the hell is it then?â
âDad,â I say, sharply. âDonât you blame him! And donât you call him a shitbag!â
âGet in the house,â he snarls, without looking at me.
âCarl,â Jamie says, and in his voice is a warning tone, of a kind Iâve never quite heard from a man before. âIt just happened. We didnât meanâ¦â
âShut up,â Dad grits, his teeth clenched. âGet in the goddamn house, Sara.â
âNo! Iâm not a little girl any more, Dad. You canât order me around.â I grab Jamieâs hand.
He twines his fingers with mine and pulls my hand close to his body, watching my dad warily.
âYouâre under my roof! You work for me. Youâll do as I say.â
âThe hell I will!â
Dad glares at me, hurt and anger in his eyes.
âCarl,â Jamies starts, his voice still carrying that undertone.
My dad glares at Jamie now. âThis is bullshit. I thought more of you than this, James. You just got here, now youâre gonna fuck everything up right off the bat? You should be ashamed of yourself!â
âIâm not ashamed of anything. You donât underâ¦.â
âOh I understand, alright. Jesus Christ! I need this like I need another heart attack.â Dad swipes his hand across his mouth, a gesture so familiar to me it breaks my heart.
âMaybe if you got that temper of yours under better control, you wouldnât have had a heart attack in this first place. Always jumping the gun, freaking out before you know the whole story. Youâre a good man Carl, but you have anger issues.â Jamie says what everyone knows but never wants to say to my Dadâs face.
Dadâs lip curls again. âYou fucking piece ofâ¦â
âThatâs enough!!!â Jamie roars.
My Dadâs fists clench and unclench, his face white except for two red swatches right under his eyes.
But, wonder of wonders, he shuts up.
Still. My heart feels like itâs about to break.
Even if he is a stubborn, ornery, difficult man, heâs still my Dad. And even if he does have anger issues, theyâre directed to the outside world, never to his family.
Heâs always treated me and my mom like treasures, always putting us first, before himself, before anything else.
âDad,â I say, the tears starting to come. âAre you okay? Pleaseâ¦â
He waves a hand at me with a growl.
âNo, listen,â I plead. âWe didnât mean for this to happen. It justâ¦happened. We just⦠like each other.â
Iâm not gonna tell my Dad that Iâm falling in love with Jamie because I know that love canât happen that fast.
