Chapter Seven
New Orleans, The Americas. Several Weeks Previously.
Jean-Cristophe lay sprawled on his back and reached for his mate but found nothing. He opened one eye. It was early, the sun had yet to kiss the sky. He groaned. He was hard and ached for her. Emma had lately taken to waking before he did and slipping out of their bed, going up to the graveyard to watch the sun come up sitting next to Darbyâs grave. His ancestress had left her a note telling of a vision sheâd had of trouble coming and Emma standing with the then-alpha of their pack. Right or wrong, he was that alpha.
In some ways, that note had helped Emma settle more easily into her life with him. In others, it had caused her to fret about what the future might hold.
Jean-Cristophe swore. He hoped if there was an afterlife, that Darbyâs mate, Jean-Michel, would take his mate to task for the trouble she was causing him. He would have sworn he could hear a womanâs soft laughter as he swung his legs over the side of his bed. It was not the first time he had felt Darbyâs presence. He dismissed it with a hope that she would feel her belovedâs hand against her naked bottom. He pulled on his boots and clothing and left their room, heading down the stairs into the foyer.
âI tried to persuade her not to go,â said Loretta, their housekeeper.
âIâm sure, but as you know, my mate can be quite stubborn when it suits her. She is convinced that the trouble Darby warned her of is near. I will return shortly with your mistress slung over my shoulder.â
Jean-Cristophe headed up to Darbyâs grave but stopped when he heard the sound of a boat bumping up against their dock as if it were tied to it. None of their ships were currently at the plantation nor were any scheduled to be there. He broke into a run and charged down to knock the man standing close to Emma away from her. Male alpha wolves were notoriously possessive and would not tolerate any man outside their pack being in even close proximity to their mates.
âJean-Cristophe!â Emma cried. âWhat is wrong with you?â
âHe is not pack and should not be within reach of you,â he growled, intimidating the man he had knocked down.
âOh, for heavenâs sake,â she said, pushing past him and helping the man to his feet. âHe did nothing more than I asked of him and you will apologize.â
âI will do nothing of the sort,â he snarled. âWhat I will do is take you back to our room to put you over my knee where you and I can have another discussion about what I will and wonât allow where your safety is concerned.â
âI meant no harm to your lady or insult to you, Alpha,â the man said, his eyes darting nervously between them.
âJean-Cristophe,â she said in a more cajoling tone, âplease, my beloved. I asked Captain Treen to keep his eyes and ears open on his travels.
