Captain Reynolds still hadnât answered my question when Zoë and that big fella Jayne came back. Their news werenât good.
âFour of them over our side, sir,â said Zoë.
âUh-huh,â said the captain, but his mind was still on that wretched brown coat, I could tell.
âWhat did you see, Mal?â said Jayne.
âThree of âem on ours,â I said.
âThem odds ainât good, Mal,â said Jayne. âWhat we gonna do?â
âCollierâs a Browncoat,â mused the captain.
I could see where this was goinâ and I did not think much of it as an idea. I looked round our position, usinâ the eyes that God gave me, and I had an idea. So I put in, âWhy donât weââ
âSir?â said Zoë.
âFrank Collier,â said Captain Reynolds. âHe fought with the Independents.â
âSo?â Jayne spat on the ground. âWarâs long over and I ainât ever interested. What we need to worry about is that those fellas are shootinâ at us right now. Gorram stupid idea coming over here,â he muttered. âWalked over more or less in broad daylight. Musta seen us cominâ a mile off.â
âThinkinâ I might go and have a word with him,â said the captain.
âWhat?â Jayne wasnât happy. âMal, thatâs a dumb idea!â
I was inclined to agree, and, besides, I thought I had a pretty good idea. âAllâs I want to say isââ
âHush, please, Miss Annie!â
âYou think heâd been open to listeninâ, sir?â
âThinkinâ it might be worth a try.â
âAnother dumb idea on top of a whole day of dumb ideas,â grumbled Jayne. âNo good ever came of walkinâ. Betterân that, shoulda not bothered cominâ over here in the first place. Said we shouldnât. Sittinâ ducks.â
âHe ainât shown us much in the way of consideration as yet, sir,â said Zoë.
âDoes he know weâre on his side?â
âHe ainât on our side, Mal! Keep tryna tell you that!â
And, once again, I agreed with Jayne Cobb. Who says thereâs no such thing as miracles. That darn war. Over years ago, and still these fellas talkinâ like they was still fightinâ it. I was done with all this, but nobody listens to you when youâre my age and particularly not given the way I am. They all seem to think I musta lost my brains when I lost my arm. Itâs my experience that when folk donât start listeninâ they ainât ever gonna listen, so you may as well get on with what you think is best. I lifted up my little pistol, the one Daddy got me for my fourteenth birthday, and I fired straight at the corner of the nearest window. Iâd noticed, you see, that this was a particular kind of reinforced glass, and the thing about this particular kind of reinforced glass: you shoot in the center thereâs a big explosion you get yourself covered in shards and risk all manner of cuts and damage. You shoot dead on the right spot in that bottom corner andâphwock. It kinda implodes on itself. I read that on the Cortex once. Thereâd been a scandal; folks installinâ the stuff and then findinâ it werenât as secure as they thought.
