CHAPTER 16
The knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. I figured it was Asher wanting to negotiate another solution after realizing he couldn’t deliver. It had to be humbling for him to admit it. I opened the door, prepared to find Asher, and instead saw Mephisto.
He had an envelope in hand but waited patiently for me to invite him in before handing it to me. Setting the new cup of Kahlua-free coffee on the table, I took it from him. The anticipation of getting the Mystic Souls had me so distracted, the coffee cooled and had to be refreshed several times.
Magic enveloped me as soon as Mephisto entered the room. He was no longer subduing it, instead letting it cloak him like a second skin. The urge to taste it came back with a vengeance. By the look on his face, he knew. I wouldn’t miss this feeling and the aggrieved feeling that followed when my desire couldn’t be satisfied.
Mephisto took in the desk and chair in the corner that I used as my home office. I rarely used the space, preferring to meet clients at my office. The corner was the only possible place to put my desk since I’d converted my other bedroom—if you could call the tiny room that—into a meditation room. It was my everything room, allowing me to escape the heaviness of magic that lingered even after I was no longer near the person. The scent from the vanilla candle that I always kept burning wafted into the living room.
He stood in the middle of the room and did a complete turn, giving the space another once-over.
“If you worked for me, you could afford better.”
He was right. My two-bedroom apartment could easily fit in his living room. It was small, but it was mine, and it fit me to a T. The tiny kitchen was all I needed since most of my meals were just a sandwich or peanut butter and apples. The quaint living room was just big enough to hold my multicolored sofa and a small tan accent chair. I had a TV on the wall.
“I don’t want better. I like what I have.”
He looked around doubtfully, then said, “Landon said you returned his items.”
As of this morning, Mephisto hadn’t paid me, so I suspected he had a check and planned to use it as an introduction to inviting me to be an employee, with the promise of more consistent checks. I didn’t need the consistency because anytime he contacted me for a job, it paid more than enough.
“Did you get my payment?”
“No, not as of this morning.” I grabbed my phone off the little nook near the kitchen, pulled up my bank app, and looked. I raised a brow at the amount. “You didn’t take out your fee.” I’d expected him to, as well as subtract the cost of the repairs. Either way, the amount was more for one job than I’d make for half the year. It was more than enough.
