For a moment she kissed him back , enjoying the warm sweep of pleasure spearing through her. Then she remembered her mission and pulled away.

“I won’t let you distract me. Not until I get an answer. Will you do it, Clay? Will you find out if there is any subject I might draw that the paper would like to reproduce?”

He drew her back into his arms. “I’ll find out on one condition.”

“And that is?”

“If there is a drawing they want you to do . . . somewhere you need to go, I go with you.” He kissed the side of her ne c k. “You no longer need to sneak off on your own. You have a husband to get you there safely.”

“All right,” she murmured, between soft, nibbling kisses. “If there is something they wish me to do, you can go with m e.”

Then he found her mouth again. The kiss turned fierce and hungry, his big hand caressed her breast, and she forgot about her drawing, forgot everything but the feel of his hard body pressing against her.

Her senses didn’t return until several hours later, when she awakened from their after n oon lovemaking in the middle of his big four-poster bed. Again the thought occurred: dear God — I’m in love with him.

Considering the man he was, the sort of man he always would be, it was truly a terrifying thought.

The week passed swiftly. Clay had never imagined being married would bring him such a feeling of contentment. Not only did he enjoy his wife in bed, he actually liked talking to her, simply being with her.

Unlike most of the women he knew, Kitt was well-educated — thanks to a fierce determination on her part and her father’s desire to keep her in school and therefore out of his hair. She was intelligent and blessed with a deep-seated curiosity that included just about everything. Her laughter and enthusiasm filled his days with joy, while her newly awakened passion filled his nights.

Still, in that regard, he trod softly. As much as she enjoyed the pleasures he had shown her, she retained a wariness that stemmed from her earlier mistreatment. In time, she would blossom, be ready to accept his more ardent, more passionate nature, a side of himself he had kept under careful control.

Smiling as he thought of her, wishing Kitt were at home this afternoon instead of out shopping with Ariel so that he could make love to her again, he climbed the stairs to the master suite. He had told her he would f i nd out if there were other sketches the newspaper might want or some they might want commissioned and he was determined to do so.
