Chapter 4: Miles, Devin, and Sebastian

Present Day

Miles and Blake stepped from the car, looking at the big building surrounded by a low wooden fence in front of them. It was a huge, old-fashioned house with open green lawn, neatly trimmed grass, and lots of flowering plants in bloom. The sight was serene and beautiful, perfect.

The man they were about to see, Dr. Jeff Richards, was the director of this place, the San Antonio Valley Psychiatric Institute. Miles had called him to let him know they were coming.

A man clad in a loose shirt and jeans was cutting red roses from the bushes by the open double-entry doors. His jaws were dark with stubble, as if he hadn’t shaved in more than a week. But his deep-set eyes looked as friendly as his smile.

“Hi,” said Miles. “I’m Tucker and this is Cruz, and we’re here to meet Dr. Richards?”

The man offered his hand. “Right. I’ve been waiting for you. Just call me Jeff.”

“Jeff.” Miles nodded, feeling rather taken aback. He exchanged glances with Blake.

Jeff chuckled. He seemed to understand what Miles was thinking. “We’re never very formal here. And the boys and girls here like it this way.”

Boys and girls, though, from what Miles saw, it was more like granddads and grandmas. “They do look happy.”

“They are. Come on, let’s get inside. You were inquiring about Devin?”

“Yes,” Blake said as they followed the doctor. Inside, it felt even homier and more comfortable. They entered a large sitting room with couches and a big fireplace in the corner. There was no resemblance to any kind of mental institution Miles had in mind. The room led to another spacious area, clearly a dining room, with large teak tables and chairs.

Blake asked, “Doctor, do you have a lot of young patients these days?”

Dr. Richards turned to open a door as he replied, “No, not a lot.” He led them into a study that also served as a library. Miles whistled. The room held a vast collection of books. They were arranged neatly on shelves that stretched from ceiling to floor.

“Do your patients come in here and read?”

“Sure. None of the rooms are off-limits for them in this house. They live here. It’s their home. They are more than welcome to make use of all the facilities we provide. Gym, swimming pool—they can even cook in the kitchen anytime they feel like it.”

“Huh,” Miles said, impressed. “That’s fabulous.”

“Thank you,” Jeff said, smiling as he sat behind a dark mahogany table. “Please, take a seat.” He nodded as Miles and Blake sat down across the table from him. “Now, what do you want to know about Devin, and why?”

* * * *

Jeff listened to Miles and Blake’s account with growing unease, which quickly turned into anger and disbelief. “Are you implying that Devin had something to do with the destruction of his house, and the murder of his entire family?”

Miles started to say something but Jeff cut him off. “First, let me tell you this,” he gritted his teeth.
