Icicle wore â well, thatâs not so important any more; what is is that Edith has started to dress only in clothes from the wardrobe in her room â clothes once owned and worn by the Ownersâ daughter. And Icicle has helped her put her outfits together. There can be no other explanation for how Edith has so suddenly begun to acquire chic. My disappointment, my chagrin, is inestimable: they are playing dressing-up together, and Iâm not included. Itâs my party, Iâve given them all the cake, and they wonât even let me play Sardines with them. Needless to say, there is a deal of limitation on the outfits that even someone as ingenious as Cecile is able to put together from entirely pre-1979 pieces; blouses with flounces around the arms, tight pullovers, flared corduroy trousers. Yet I believe that, before she died, the Ownersâ daughter had, once or twice, been down to London for shopping trips â and had either gone, or been taken, to some fairly expensive boutiques. The dresses suit: Edith is tall enough and mature enough in the face not to look as if sheâs straining for adulthood. As all old clothes do, they make her look older: because we associate them with people whom we have seen age after wearing those outfits â people in photographs and the audience of Top of the Pops. Luckily for Edith, the daughterâs taste seems to have been for a silky flamboyance that harked back to 1972 rather than anticipated the polka-dot horrors of 1982. The fabrics are, for the most part, entirely natural. There is even fur; fur without guilt â how fantastic: like grandmotherâs fur, but in a cut youâd have bought new; a cut youâd have throttled a mink for.
