Chapter 8

I did not allow Rayne to drive her car because if she could not drive herself to therapy, then she certainly could not drive me. This was the last favor I would be doing for her…no. She had no money, no job, and nowhere to go....

It never fucking ends!

She was sitting beside me quietly and probably this was the perfect time for her to hear what I had to say.

“Rayne, I would like to get my one hundred thousand dollars back….”

“I will return it. I promise,” she said.

“I want you to leave, but I don’t want to send you out onto the street with no money, no job, or a place to stay,” I told her. “You can try to get your job back or apply somewhere else, and you need to rent an apartment as well. When you have those two things, you can leave. After you’re settled in both home and work, then you can pay me back. I’ll come up with a reasonable payment plan.”

“Thank you,” she said in a trembling voice and she had not stopped crying. “I just want you to know that I will always love you.”

“Yeah, I realize now that love alone cannot make a relationship work. I never imagined that I would live my life without you because I love you so much, but I was about to kill someone today because of that same love. I would rather do without it. I need you to hurry and leave before I lose my mind.”

“I will.”

“Now, I don’t give a damn who you fuck because you are not my girlfriend anymore, so feel free to go out and look for a job and do what you have to do to get the hell away from me.”

We continued the rest of the way in silence and when we entered Marisa’s front office, Erin was there to greet us. I was happy to see her and it put a smile on my face. For a second, I thought about the possibility of Erin and me after Rayne was gone, but I wanted to be alone. I enjoyed talking to her, but I did not want anything more. If the love I had for Rayne was not enough to save us, then what would make Erin and I work? It was useless. That life was just not for me.

Rayne and I sat side by side in the waiting area without saying anything to each other, but I could see the tears falling onto her hands.

“Rayne, Marisa is ready for you,” Erin said.

“Thank you,” Rayne replied and looked at me. “Rebecca, if only you could see my heart and know how much I love you and that I would do anything to make you happy and keep you safe…”

“Not anything,” I pointed out because all she had to do was stop fucking all those women. She was an addict and maybe she could not help herself, but I had no doubt that she loved me.

“I hope Marisa can make everything right again.
