Base types

Flat

Flat bases are the most common type recorded at Laona, accounting for 50% (n=1,333) of bases identifiable to type in the sherdage from the settlement; it is found in association with most ware types and shapes other than the globular closed vessel and the various types of flasks.

Flanged

Flanged bases are flat and extend slightly beyond the juncture with the rim; they are found most frequently on coarse ware trays, but finer flanges occur occasionally in association with bowls on some examples of monochrome and pattern-painted wares (e.g. RS 709, 781). Flanged bases account for c. 35% of identifiable bases recorded in the settlement sherdage, and that number was probably larger given that many flat base fragments from coarse ware trays are likely to have come from vessels with flanged bases.

Raised

The raised base is essentially a variation of the flat type, with the exterior surface rising slightly towards the centre. It is a fairly common type, accounting for c. 15% of identifiable bases in the settlement sherdage.

Pointed

Pointed bases are found on flasks in cemetery and settlement contexts; they occur relatively infrequently at the site, accounting for only 3% of identifiable bases from the settlement sherdage.

Omphalos

Omphalos bases can be flat or raised on their outer surfaces, and are always raised on their interiors. The type is rare at Laona, with less than a dozen recorded examples among the sherdage and on only two complete or near-complete vessels (1558 and 1585).

Pedestal

Only one base of this type was found at Laona, on RWL goblet 523 from T. 221 in Op. C; it consists of a fairly short cylindrical stem joined to a flat circular base. No examples of this type were found among the settlement sherdage.
