Over the next two weeks, Jimmy and I spend a lot of time together. Training, chilling, getting naked. Lots of getting naked. But every time I have to go for a run, lift weights, or put in some extra hours at the gym, I get this little niggle of doubt. Itâs like Iâm waiting for him to grow tired of my busy life, which is crazy since his is busy too, but itâs been a bone of contention in most of my relationships, and I just canât get my head around the fact he honestly doesnât seem to care.
Today, everything is about to come to a head. Weâve been planning to jump from the Stratosphere Hotel together this afternoon, but Iâve just gotten off the phone with Seth, whoâs asked me to come to the gym. My big fight is fast approaching, and heâd arranged for me to have a one-on-one training session with Maryse De Vries, the Dutch former world champion and someone whoâs previously defeated my British opponent, next week. Unfortunately, Maryse has been called out of the country and her flight leaves tonight, which means if I want to see her, it has to be this afternoon.
Jimmy has been looking forward to the jump all week. So have I, for that matter. I hate that Iâll be letting him down. But this is a one-off opportunity. Maryse might have the advice I need to win my last-chance fight. I wipe a hand down my face and groan. Iâm going to have to cancel. Better get this over with.
I find Jimmy in the kitchen. Heâs just come from the stationary cycle, so his T-shirt is plastered to his tightly-honed body. I bite my lip and take a moment to appreciate the sight. He fills a glass of water and passes it to me, one side of his mouth hitching up in a way that lets me know heâs noticed me checking him out.
âWhat did Seth want?â he asks.
Ugh. That.
I wring my hands. âIâm really sorry to do this, but I need to postpone the Stratosphere jump. He asked me to come in this afternoon for the session with Maryse De Vries. Sheâs had to reschedule and wonât be able to do next week.â
He looks disappointed but nods. âThatâs okay. We can do the jump another time. Maybe after your fight?â
Thatâs it? Surely not.
I frown. âYou can go without me if youâd like.â
He shoots me a pointed look. âHalf the fun is doing it with you. We can wait a couple of weeks. Itâs no big deal.â
My back teeth grind together. He says that, but does he really mean it? One of my exes used to say something similar, but then heâd sulk or turn passive-aggressive about it later. I canât read Jimmy, and while he doesnât seem the sort to do that, I donât know for sure. Iâm afraid this is going to come back and kick me in the ass.
âSeriously?â I demand. âThatâs it? No big deal?â
âYeah.â He sips his water and leans against the counter.
