Over the next two weeks, Jimmy and I spend a lot of time together. Training, chilling, getting naked. Lots of getting naked. But every time I have to go for a run, lift weights, or put in some extra hours at the gym, I get this little niggle of doubt. It’s like I’m waiting for him to grow tired of my busy life, which is crazy since his is busy too, but it’s been a bone of contention in most of my relationships, and I just can’t get my head around the fact he honestly doesn’t seem to care.

Today, everything is about to come to a head. We’ve been planning to jump from the Stratosphere Hotel together this afternoon, but I’ve just gotten off the phone with Seth, who’s asked me to come to the gym. My big fight is fast approaching, and he’d arranged for me to have a one-on-one training session with Maryse De Vries, the Dutch former world champion and someone who’s previously defeated my British opponent, next week. Unfortunately, Maryse has been called out of the country and her flight leaves tonight, which means if I want to see her, it has to be this afternoon.

Jimmy has been looking forward to the jump all week. So have I, for that matter. I hate that I’ll be letting him down. But this is a one-off opportunity. Maryse might have the advice I need to win my last-chance fight. I wipe a hand down my face and groan. I’m going to have to cancel. Better get this over with.

I find Jimmy in the kitchen. He’s just come from the stationary cycle, so his T-shirt is plastered to his tightly-honed body. I bite my lip and take a moment to appreciate the sight. He fills a glass of water and passes it to me, one side of his mouth hitching up in a way that lets me know he’s noticed me checking him out.

“What did Seth want?” he asks.

Ugh. That.

I wring my hands. “I’m really sorry to do this, but I need to postpone the Stratosphere jump. He asked me to come in this afternoon for the session with Maryse De Vries. She’s had to reschedule and won’t be able to do next week.”

He looks disappointed but nods. “That’s okay. We can do the jump another time. Maybe after your fight?”

That’s it? Surely not.

I frown. “You can go without me if you’d like.”

He shoots me a pointed look. “Half the fun is doing it with you. We can wait a couple of weeks. It’s no big deal.”

My back teeth grind together. He says that, but does he really mean it? One of my exes used to say something similar, but then he’d sulk or turn passive-aggressive about it later. I can’t read Jimmy, and while he doesn’t seem the sort to do that, I don’t know for sure. I’m afraid this is going to come back and kick me in the ass.

“Seriously?” I demand. “That’s it? No big deal?”

“Yeah.” He sips his water and leans against the counter.
